Deployable side steps

Calling those that have the deployable side steps on their fatty...

Are they good, worth it, useful etc?

Much easier to get in and out of the car with them.

Agree with above comments, but mine (at 5 years old) need lubing every 6 to 8 weeks or they stick and misbehave. I've found a cool gadget attracts great derision if it fails in public... Mike - MPx

What method and lube do you use?

Currently use 3in1 High Performance Lubricant with PTFE. The steps have a good safety feature that they return (in or out) if they meet much resistance on their travel. The offside step suddenly stayed out during a trip to north Cornwall on a Sunday and that 3in1 stuff was the best I could find in the only available open corner shop. I think its better than WD40. Deployed steps are not a useful feature on Cornish lanes and I was a bit worried about damage if I needed to take refuge in a gateway etc

I spray each side of each pivot rod where it goes through the brackets (that's about 16 places per end), and importantly the drive shaft from the motor assembly at the front. If I've left it long enough that a step is misbehaving then I usually have to manually assist (push or pull) to get the step to cycle properly. Once its working I spray again and cycle it a few times. As I said, it should last a few weeks then - indeed I last did it on 24th July so its probably time again now. Its possible to hear it labouring when it needs doing, but I've not yet managed to pinpoint exactly where the noise/problem is coming from so I tend to do the whole lot. I got the car in Feb. The steps were lubed at the dealers in April, and I've done it three times since then. Mike - MPx

So they seem like a good mod then...

Only lasting 5 years before needing very regular maintenance is a bit of a bad point though.

Are they strong enough to be used to stand on when washing the car or reaching to the roof etc? __

They have a "lock out" setting that allows you to reach the roof.

Millerj90, thanks, but are they strong feeling? I had steps on my discovery 2 and they felt a bit flimsy.. Ok for a single foot into the car, but standing with both feet reaching up was not great (granted they were 10 years old...). __

They feel strong enough to me. I've been standing on them to get to the roof and I'm no Size Zero!

The steps themselves are strong enough bits of kit, I'd say just as robust as the fixed steps I had on my last SC. But they have a motor each side and loads of moving parts. I'm not sure how the motor would react to wading or wallowing in mud. I would think that hitting a rock in the wrong place could also cause some issues. Absolutely no prob driving across fields and the like, but not ideal for proper trials stuff. Mike - MPx
