My First RR - broken in 36 hours

I've wanted a RR since I was 8 and finally got a 2010 3.6 Vogue with 55k on the clock after I came into some money at the grand age of 51.

Picked it up on Friday and drove it home from Yorkshire (non LR dealership) to Cambridgeshire with no problems at all other than I had no idea what half the stuff did Very Happy

Then last night while driving back home from a do in Berkshire well after midnight it issued all sorts of warnings and put me in Restricted Performance mode.

Restarting the car seemed to cure it, but it happened again for a further 3 times until we finally got home.

Google brought me here and to the fact that it was likely to be a split Turbo hose. Having inspected the hoses this morning, it does indeed look like that is the cause, so I am slightly relieved - I know very little about what happens when you put the pedal down and turn the steering wheel so this site has been a godsend already.

Being a Bank Holiday weekend I can't get hold of the warranty company until Tuesday, and my local LR garage isn't open yet anyway, so I'm somewhat frustrated (and a little pee'd off).

I feel it's tainted the arrival of my dream car and although I know that these things can happen at any time, I wondered if it was likely that the hose would have shown deterioration in the pre-delivery checks (which includes hoses) that the dealer says they have done ?

Thanks in advance
Andy

The split may have already existed and therefore may have been detected with enough scrutiny but treat the event like a flat tyre - inconvenient at the time but will soon be forgotten once fixed.

Welcome. You are in good company here and there are plenty of techies who can advise you.

You are not alone. My 2011 packed up when I had it second hand in 2015 and it turned out to be the DPF in the exhaust. The dealer should help you and you will be covered under consumer law for a fix, I believe you can even reject the car if it gets tricky.

Hope it works out for you and look forward to hearing the updates

Honestly, not worth the paperwork to claim......it's easy job and will help you get to know how the thing works!!

The hose is about 40-50 quids and it's a 1 screwdriver operation. Thumbs Up

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic26843.html

That shows how to get it off, you can patch it up like that for the cost of a roll of tape from Halfords, and this will keep you going until your dealer can get one in.

It's a common fault, they will go at some point if you sort them now then they should be fine for another 5-10 years. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Welcome!

...............and Never Give Up!

I had the same experience but the car WILL put a smile on your face and you WILL NOT want to have a Full Fat Range Rover-less drive at home despite this early setback!

Stick with it, the winter is coming and you will be encapsulated in warmth and serenity no matter what mother nature throws at you, even in the middle of summer.

This is a very helpful forum, as you can already see with the link.

regards

John

Saving by only changing one will usually bite you in the bum VERY soon!!!

If you can't/won't wait to get new hoses, then duct-tape can be used to seal up the leak temporarily.

Thanks all for your kind words and encouragement. Thumbs Up

As I'm not one to tinker with cars I wasn't expecting to be fixing my new one with tape ! I shall pop down to Halfords today and pick up some magic tape.

Silicone rescue tape would be better, but I've read about duck tape working. ______________________________

The Harris pipe repair tape works perfectly in 3 layers, 1st a layer of reinforcing tape, then some self amalgamating tape and another layer of reinforcing tape.

Will last a good few miles and resist full boost. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Halfords don't do the Harris tape any more according to the chap in there (and their website) so I used the silicone fixxit tape.

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-bo...icone-tape

Took me 15 minutes to remove the hose, seal it and put it back so I was quite happy with my work. On the short drive I took later on there was no restricted performance, so that is an improvement.

Still looks to me like there's some smoke on kick-down and an annoying whistle has developed on acceleration, although if I take my foot off the gas and then back on it seems to disappear. I'm beginning to think there's something more seriously wrong with the car, or perhaps my repair isn't holding although it looks to be solid enough.

Got a long-ish trip tomorrow that I can't miss or be late for so I'm fretting somewhat.

Andy

PS. Colour is actually Ipanema Sand, not sure where I got Atacama from, but I guess a beach is different sand from a desert.

probably all part of the same problem Thumbs Up

you might get a bit of smoke for a while as it clears out from the soot after the leak. Probably whistling is also related. wait until you have the new hoses attached to see if the symptoms go away.

and avoid properly booting it until you have a new hose on, if you pop the tape off you will be back to square one. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
