Hi,

Small issue on the 2004 L322
I bought a LCD repair from AK speedo, some pixels faded some other gone.
Everything went well until I reached the 4 needles, how do I remove them SAFELY?
I watch many videos, but they all contradict each other!
I'd like to repair the LCD not to snatch the needles & the motor behind!!

Any safe instruction?

didn't know that the needles had to come out....some on the forum have done this type of repair so i'm sure someone will come along and advise.. ... - .- -.

I thought there is a little slotted tool to hold the shaft while the pointer is removed.

The only problem I can see with this is, how do you re-calibrate the speedo and other gauges to read correctly when you re-assemble it all.

The AK Speedo kit doesn't need the needles removing, it comes with a drill template and you drill through something instead!

I've got the kit at work but haven't had the balls to fit it yet!! 

Drill & Balls, not sure of the combination.
Better to get one in working condition on Ebay, I'll go that route.

i got the AK Speedo kit doesn't need the needles removing but you need patience and a steady hand

even with the template where you drill the holes measure twice and remark the template and start off with a pilot hole then work your way up drill size and then you can undo the 4 screws

make sure you clean the circuit board contact thoroughly so they are nice and shiny

get some thin sellotape and carefully line up the contacts and then press down rubbing across the ribbon - semi assemble and test before putting it back together

This might be useful for anyone replacing pixel ribbon in the future.

I have a l322 that I imported from Japan and although it did pass the MOT with a KPH speedo I wanted to replace the dial markings with a MPH facia. These can be bought on various sites on the web for about £90.
I did not want to buy a complete cluster unit either second hand or new because (A) the I have less than 40k miles recorded on my car (although it is shown in Kilometres its easy to convert to miles) and (B) another unit would need to be programmed to the vehicle.

I found both of the previously posted youtube pixel links while looking for instructions but they did not show how to remove the needles. So in my infinite wisdom I used a link for a 2005 RR Sport. Seemed easy so I just followed the instructions and pulled off the first needle. Yep! infinite wisdom? look similar but different and the l322 (BMW) has different stepper motors so totally wrecked the thin ribbon spring that returns the motor to 0 (these motors are the same on speedo, rev counter, fuel and temp gauges ) Eventually found a link on BMW forum for removal of needles.
Actually akspeedo do a tool for removal of needles (£11) but do not show it on the pixel replacement film instructions.
It is easy with the tool and no chance of damaging anything with that drilling template when replacing pixel ribbon.

I have bought my tool from akspeedo.com because I do not need to fix pixels and they are in UK. So I cannot recommend pixelfix.net but they seem ok.
Luckily I did not buy a new dial facia because it was cheaper to buy a full cluster for ebay with faulty pixels so I don't need to pay for new speedo motor, but my decision to do that was just luck..
