I have a TD6 '03. has 223,000kms on.
The other night came home and heard a slight whirring noice as if a serpentine belt is rubbing against something.
I couldnt see anything and the belt seems to be in place.
Was too scared to drive after that for a week or so.
Today, i got the courage that if i got stuck i would have a friend to help tow me. So off i went, didnt hear any whirring, except that the whine form the fuel pump seems louder than normal. I presume its the fuel pump.
no noise until about 5 kms from home at the same place i heard the noise before.
Stumped.
Can the fuel pump do this before knackering itself?
Is it the gearbox or torque convertor( the box is pulling strong like a train)?
Still stumped, the slight whirring noise doesnt appear until i have done about 20kms and the engine is nice and hot.
what i dont want to do is drive it until something breaks to find out the problem, which is not really the worry, the worry is breaking down in africa , even if its the city , at night.

Do you only hear it when stationary? if so it could well be your air con compressor , they whir when they get low on gas. 2008 MY Supercharged

I had this the other day, when I parked up I was convinced I could hear the steering column motor whirring away all by itself.

So in a panic and not wanting to burn the steering column motor out I rushed to disconnect the battery, when I lifted the bonnet I realised the whirring was coming from the ECU cooling fan, so panic over

It's odd that it sounds as if it's coming from the drivers footwell though....... ______________________________

i must say thank you for your comment, i took the fat one for a drive yesterday and drove no aircon and no whirring.
So this morning i will take the car to an aircon guy just down the road and get the gas sorted.
This makes sense to me as a few months ago in the middle of summer, i took a long drive and it was 38c, and then felt a slight shuddering come from the floor. i switched the aircon off and it was gone. I made the assumption it was getting very hot and the clutch was coming on and off.
So , i will get this sorted and get back to you later.

Ok, i popped down to the aircon repair shop, within 1 minute the black technician was onto the job. Told me within 2 mins my system was almost empty.
He Purged and the refilled with oil and gas, and off i was. all within 20 mins.
he was telling me that the biggest problem is that people run the aircons till they are dry and then the bearings and pistons get stuffed in the compressor.
He told me that the compressor form JLR is 17k in rands and if your unit is removed and rebuilt to work like new its only 6k.
Nice and quiet. I have to go to bloemfontein in the course of the next couple of weeks and thats about 1000kms both ways , so i reckon if the aircon is fine for that distance, the problem will be sorted.

But why did the gas Leak out?

well the guy was saying that after many years of not being serviced the oil breaks down and the gas also stops working and then thats where the problem starts. he says you definitely need to service the aircon once every two years.
there was oil and gas in and when they purged it it was dirty and as he says not effective.
cant tell you more than that.

Great result indeed.
I am led to believe that one should switch ait con on about knce every month or so.
This keeps the system 'moving' and the joints 'moist'
Lubricating everuthing and stopping joints from drying oot.
