Hi all,

Need to change my crankcase filter so obviously going to upgrade to the vortex type.

Question is, is it preferable to get the complete unit ie. housing and filter or no point, and just shove the new filter in the existing housing?

I would suggest filter only as well, unless you know there is a problem with your housing.

I'm not 100% but i'm sure i've heard that the valve on them can get blocked, so might just be worth checking its all clean before reassembling.

I changed just my filter last time, and it's been fine since but as I'm going to do an oil change soon, I decided to buy the vortex type so I can fit and forget about it! 

Should this be replaced as a service item? My fatty is coming up for its 1st service in my ownership & wondered if I should be changing this at the same time?

I would look at it as a service item. The advantage with the vortex filter is that it is a one off replacement thus avoiding the need to access it at each service which is bit of a pain in the rear end. John

i bought one of those filters and it wouldn't go in the casing, it turned out the small notch was in the wrong place, so i had to file a new one. i contacted the supplier and they said that it was very unusual and that i probably had a pattern filter housing. possible but unlikely, as it still had the loo roll type filter, so why would anyone change the housing?

Yes just buy the filter without housing.

Filter only mate, I did both my Td6 and my daughter Td4 in her Freelander. I cleaned the housing out with brake cleaner popped it back together. Never had a problem. I also fitted K&N air filters into both vehicles then you don't need to go in there again for awhile. Change the little clear bulb style filter on the turbo at the same time.
