Replacing Cigar Lighter with USB

I was getting annoyed with my cigar lighter socket not giving my phone enough juice on navigation so I decide to upgrade the lighter socket with one of these.

, got it off ebay.

Now fitted it and seems a lot better. I will have to monitor the battery to make sure it isn’t causing any significant drain but looks good so far.

this is where i ordered.

the standard cigar lighter has two different size spade connectors so you will need to fix the wiring slightly.
you might find them cheaper elswhere.

i have also order this one which hasnt arrived yet

Sounds like a good idea, however, how do I get the old one out? I guess it might mean removing the central console?

On my 2002 it was quiet simple. Take a look at powerfuluk.com to see if they have any videos on how to do it. That's where I learnt how to do mine.

Thanks that site is certainly worth a look, but they haven't done a fitting video yet.

A bit more frreting on that site, and there is a video (featuring cam tech Craig) which shows how to remove the trim.

But having removed the central console to gain access the the cigar lighter in the ashtray, I found the new one wouldn't fit. It has a wider diameter than the original, which would mean somehow widening the aperture, and that is something I wasn't prepared to do. 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

Understandable with an 11 plate. my 02 I was less concerned and used this http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Power+Tool...ill/p61469 with a little opening up after and it fitted.

I had several of those but they are usually lower rating and my phone was losing charge when used as sat nav. With my 4.2A I am a happy man. phone actually charges now when being satnav.

I've found the same thing - the ones that fit flush all seem to be 1A per output.

Anything with 2.1A outputs sticks out a bit further - and some devices need the higher current/power to charge properly.

That said - I just live with one sticking out a bit.....
