Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated.

I've decided to get the fuel pump changed and hope for the best Shocked

I really need to get it done by next friday, or I'll have to hire car for work. I simply don't have the time to attempt this myself, I've spoken to the mobile mechanic who came out yesterday, and he at the moment thinks he can fit the job in subject to me sourcing a pump.

I appreciate that an X5 pump can be fitted to the existing housing, but I'm really not keen to go that route partly because it's going to be more labour time.

I've spent ages looking for replacement pumps that are in stock for quick delivery, but I've only found one supplier who has 'genuine' items in stock and they are about £800, there seem to be quite a few 'OEM' options for about £400. So now I'm giving myself a migraine debating Original vs OEM... If anyone can point me in the direction of a supplier that perhaps they have used that would mean the world to me right now.

Thanks b348xyx. Noticed that's a Britpart item, are they OK for quality?

Hi,

I have used britpart for bits in past and had no issues, i am sure others may say they have had issues but any part can have issues.

Personally if needed a new fuel pump right now i would just got with aftermarket due to the massive price difference.

also eurospares (if you want different aftermarket brand)

http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/fuel-pump-tank...-5136.html

or just the pump for £100

if you need if urgently best bet may be secondhand unit from ebay as there offering 24hour postage and few on there under £100..

One relatively cheap solution possibly...

As you run mainly (solely) on LPG, your petrol may have "gone off"; it takes about 5-6 weeks - shorter for supermarket standard petrol.

I used to get this regularly when I hade a Jeep Grand Cherokeee withLPG and resolved it by only buying 5 litres of petrol at a time - just for starting.

I do know of an excellent LPG guy in near Wantage if you are interested

Thanks berkshirelad - It has crossed my mind it could be 'bad' fuel, I've got Green Flag coming out today, so slight hope they might find something (not holding my breath...).

Yes, really grateful if you would be kind enough to send me details of your LPG contact Smile

As I said, I kept hoping it was something else including bad fuel. It wasn't. Can you hear the pump under the rear seats when you try to start it? Seats up and listen to the offside carpet area under the seat.
I went for the cheap £100 option. It solved the issue straight away.
Admittedly I don't trust it completely and always fill the tank then never do more than 200 miles before filling it again.

chris - went for a 'mid-point' option, reasonable quality pump and housing (I hope), new seals, locking rings and fuel filter.

Had a bit of luck today, called Green Flag and their chap confirmed the fuel pump relay was energising but no signs of life from the pump. He wanted to recover the vehicle to a garage, but I told him that was pointless as I have a trusted mobile mechanic on standby to come and fit the parts I'll order. I asked about a hire car and he told me Green Flag would only supply one if the vehicle was recovered to a garage which I refused. Called Green Flag a little while later and they couldn't have been more helpful, car hire company is picking me up tomorrow morning and I'm getting a large saloon for two days.

Pump will be fitted on Friday, so fingers crossed that sorts it, if not I'm in trouble...

Got to confess I've seriously considered today cutting my losses and getting rid if the pump replacement works Sad

I am not aquainted with the engine and lpg setup but had very similar symptoms on my TVR Tuscan caused by an injector jamming inthe open position. The over fueling causes the lamda to go haywire and it runs like a total pig with no power at all. A sniff around the exhaust (petrol or gas smell which the cat will not be enough to filter) should help identify. As I say not sure but a cheap fix if it is this. It also affects the fuel pump because it cannot maintain pressure as it is constanly bled off by the open injector.

Yes indeed good news, was such a relief yesterday when my wife came home and asked if "it" was fixed, I could answer yes Very Happy

I am so very grateful to everyone who took the time to respond to this thread, the replies really helped me think that I wasn't alone in trying to get it sorted.

I now intend to buy a decent fault code scanner, will probably look at stand alone or bluetooth unit that will run an app on my iPhone as I don't want to lug a laptop around with me (unless that's the best option).

Also now need to get back onto my preventative maintenance schedule - PCV, gear box, diff and transfer oil etc.

I wish everyone a great weekend !

Hi, what I don't understand is that you start on lpg... Isn't every system starting on fuel to switch over to lpg autom.
If your system is not, it might be worthwhile to always start on fuel and later switch manualy to lpg, to prevent these kind of probs. Every now and then I drive on fuel anyway, just because I feel the engine needs the lubrication, but hey I'm a total non tech.

Hello Robert,

Yes, mine does always start on petrol, then automatically switch to LPG when warm enough.

My problem was that when warm enough it would run OK on LPG, but not on petrol. When cold it struggled to start at all because, as you say, it always starts on petrol until warm enough to switch to LPG.
