is it me, i can only see the current rates on that site? there will naturally be some increases to current vehicles in budgets etc. but reading the full story, it's really only cars registered after April 2017 that will be affected by the new rules.

There is a new way of calculating the RFL for cars registered after that date to try and get more money out of the lower polluting vehicles and those costing over 40k, where you pay a first year charge then a flat fee of £140 for the following years. which sounds good, however for the FF and its ilk the first year charge is in the thousands and if a car costs over £40k then there is a £310 supplement payable over the £140 so £450 for the first 5 years. However that will be good when it comes to buying used in the future as all of the initial outlay will have been paid over the first few years and the rate going forwards will be £140...... if you follow. So top tip is buy and register before 1st April 2017 or wait to buy 2017 cars until 2022 when they will only cost the second owners £140 pa to tax Thumbs Up

the details of the changes are in this doc, fundamentally if your car is registered before april 2017 the old rules apply, but if its after the new charging structure applies.

i thinks that about covers it. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thinking it will have a slight positive effect on cars registered before 2017, after all when you look at a used 4.4 buy a pre Reg or 6month old one and you will save a fair chunk in tax. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

it does all seem to be a bit confusing, looks to me like regardless what the c02 levels are of your £250,000 supercar are, once it gets to be 6 years old then the owner will only need to pay £140 tax? Dan

👍🏻 that's the way it will work. It's just a way of getting more cash up front more quickly, short sighted in the long run as cars are lasting longer and longer nowadays so will spend longer running at the lower rates.

So if you were to buy a car in the second top band which cost over 40k (a new Ff for example) and keep it for 10 years you would pay

1700 first year payment, the £310 over 40k per album for the first 5 years, and then 140 per year for 5 years a total payment of 4550 by my reckoning......

If you bought a 2016 model the. You would pay £500 a year for 10 years, so £5k. So HMRC is £450 worse off!! How's that smart thinking from their pint of view. It's just front loading the payments. Obviously they are banking on folks swapping cars more often, however it is the car which is taxed not he owner. And if that car runs for 15 years which they do then the deficit widens. £5250 vs 7500. So over the cars life they will be 2250 worse off.

Take your average under 40kp band G car: £2775 currently, 1760 proposed - HMRC a grand worse off.

So there are 28 million cars on the roads at any one time, and as these get replaced with new stock this will leave them with an enormous multi billion pound short fall by my quick addition!! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
