been having trouble with battery drain over night after much reading im thinking hevac resistor as when i get in the car in the morning i can hear a fan noise coming from behind where the battery sits what do you think

Easy to check..either pull the fuse on the hevac system and observe ..you can also sit in the back seat,lock car and sit very still for 16 mins and listen for the wee fan behind the dash to stop..(think its a fan for an ecu)..also worth checking headlight wipers and motors...sat nav is easy to check as well..

You don't have to lock the car and sit still in the back, get in the front, shut the door, don't put the key in or near the ignition and 16mins later it should switch off...  Pete

Haha I was sat like a complete plumb then Everytime I tried it in the front the alarm wouldn't set as a sensor under the seat must have sensed me..realised that then sat in the back like a statue...my neighbour was watching and thinks I've finally cracked...

morning, put the new resistor on xmas eve not used till i came to start this morning bloody flat battery so back to the drawing board .the wife sat in it for 30 mins said she didn,t hear a thing ,light went of on gear selector no fans running starting to wonder if the new battery is faulty or ideas plz.

Have you checked the left hand boot cubby box for water? When mine filled up it took out the DSP amp, which killed the radio and the battery in one go Also the DVD Navi head unit has been known to empty the electricity overnight  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Do your headlight washers/wipers work ok? That's also a possibility! You can rule out fsr and sat nav so worth pulling their fuse and watching...after that its a matter of pulling fuses,checking earth connections ect and worth checking the possibility your battery's had it....

beginning to think battery went to it this morning started no probs took it round the block pulled back on drive checked battery 11.8 new battery aswell checked with engine running 13.8 so its charging.

Next door has same problem with BMW X5. Did the usual checks to make sure alternator was putting charge across- Fine. Just got back from EuroPart with his battery which is 15 months old and on a 4 year warranty. Their tests show it to be holding a charge. So where to now. It only flattens on a random basis. As so many Range Rover and BMW X5 diesels have matching parts, is there a similar sequence for tracking down this problem ?

I don't know whether this applies to your car, but I have had two drains due to software faults, one to do with the fuel burning heater and the other with locking. In each case the LR Assistance technician said that he could not run a diagnostic test to find the problem as the battery needed to be fully charged first. As the battery was fully discharged in each case there also needed to be a test to see whether the battery was ruined by the experience or whether it would work after being recharged. So the car went off to the dealer and they charged the battery fully and ran the tests. In the first case the battery needed to be replaced, the second time it was OK.

So maybe getting the battery fully charged and running a diagnostic test might establish what is wrong, and also whether the battery can still be used, the one that I needed to replace was no more than 18 months old. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thats why I used an intelligent charger to bring the battery up to full before submitting it to testing. Would have been so much easier if it had been naff but alas its ok so no easy route for my neighbour.

DaveK, just for the avoidance of doubt, what I was told was that the battery needed to be fully charged before the car could be interrogated on where the problem was, i.e. what was draining the battery, in addition to the separate test of the battery itself to see whether it would be OK once the problem that caused the drain had been fixed. Only Range Rovers since 1988
