Cigarette sockets staying active when locked?

Hi guys,

When we look the car the cigarette 12v sockets stay live. This will lead to a flat battery in time as when travelling we will leave in various things like the fridge, phone chargers, laptop charger etc...

Is there any way we can set the 12v sockets to turn off when the car is locked?

This is a 2003 HSE.

I'm not sure but don't the sockets power down after 16 minutes, just like the lights if you leave a door open.

Like I said I'm not sure, so hopefully someone with experience of this will be along shortly....

Just checked and the one near the key is still on Sad Not sure how long to leave it.

How can i confirm the car is 'going to sleep' as when we went to collect the car it had been sat for a while and had a flat battery.

Try the gear selector position lights, they should go out after the allotted time of 16 minutes. Be careful though as I've found that trying the tailgate release switch on the tailgate wakes up the gear selector position lights. Not sure if that wakes everything else though........... ______________________________

The sockets are either on all the time or ignition controlled on a 2003 car, no delay after the ignition is switched off.
It's possible they are on all the time due to bridging pieces being fitted in the relay bases mounted below the rear fuse board. If this is indeed the case it should be a simple matter to remove the bridging piece(s) and replace them with relays to make them ignition controlled.
Is it possible you could take a photo of the rear fuse board and relays and I'll have look for you.
Which sockets do you want ignition controlled, there are two aux sockets and two cigar sockets.

I've looked at the wiring diagram and it appears that both the cigar lighters and the accessory sockets are live all of the time. They just go from the battery to the fuse boxes then to the sockets...

@ uk marine, I agree that's what the wiring diagrams show but cars do seem to vary for some reason ie cigar sockets can be ignition controlled or not, same with aux sockets. My cigar sockets are permanently live but my aux sockets are ignition controlled.

I'm having to do this from memory as I don't have my PC with me but I think you will find the yellow "relay" is in fact a bridging piece. You can check this by pulling it out, it will have two pins not four as with a normal relay.
If you pull it out which sockets go off?
If this is indeed a bridging piece you can just replace it with a good quality 30A 4 pin relay, buy one without an inbuilt diode, for some reason the diode causes a problem.

just tested, pulled the yellow one out and the 12v socket went off Smile

I'll swap this out tomorrow with a good relay. How would i test for a diode relay?

The easiest way is to ask for one without a diode. Very Happy
Mine are somewhere in the garage so not accessible at the moment to check. Thumbs Up Which socket went off?
Where you pulled the bridge out does have facility for four pins?

I only checked the single one that was plugged in (next to gear lever).

I didn't check but was it a 4pin or 5 pin?
