My son has bought a couple of iphones and an iPad from CEX - they sell secondhand phones, etc and they are all graded - the grade a's are like brand new.

They all come with a 2 year warranty - he's been really pleased with them, and they have stores around the country plus online.

Google CEX Thumbs Up

And I just put my old ones in the drawer.......

Trouble is mine tend to be rough round the edges so worth less . Just upgraded to a 7 and this time it's not coming out of its otter box case. My 6 is now consigned to spare.

Managed to get a 5s for my lad by upgrading swmbos phone and giving him the new 5s upgrade, so it was effectively free. 5s is plenty powerful enough for a 10yo. Thumbs Up

Watch buying second hand 6's they had a battery fault where it would swell up and only last half a day. If you are handy with a micro driver a new battery is about £15 notes, also the screens are really easy to swap so if you can find one with a broken screen and a duff battery but good case and internals then you could have a good one for cheap. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Two bits of advice.

I recently looked into the iPhone 6 and noted the 'touch disease' which would steer me to another model. The new 7 is significantly more waterproofed than the 6. So, think 5s or 7.

I went with a friend when he bought a brand new 6+ when they first came out. He's an avid fisherman and insisted on a very tough, waterproof case. It wasn't cheap but it seemed almost indestructible. That might be the way to go with a 10-year old. It should survive the bathroom, falls from bikes, etc.

And BTW, I have an iPhone 4 8gb. It works just fine.

Another top point is when buying second hand beware of phones which are still locked to someone's iCloud account. This can't be removed without a lot of hassle. Generally if the phone is locked to an iCloud account it is probably stolen or a lost and found unit. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Good point. You'll want to make sure it isn't locked to a particular cell provider. Next, bring along a laptop with iTunes and try 'restore as new iPhone'. If anything like iCloud, find my phone, etc, is still in there, you have the seller there to make sure to release everything. (And if (s)he can't, walk away as it could be stolen.)

Also, these iPhone 6 phones, have a tendency, to bend. I.e. If you sit on them, they can warp. And like many iPhones, the screens can crack. But the screen can be changed easily, for about £30 but don't try it yourself. And make sure, that the Touch ID works. If you change that part, it won't work, as it's linked to the board ID.
Like others say, it's mainly bragging rights, against a more sensible priced 5s, - £120, for a 16gb. There are so many secondhand phones around. Just be careful, at say markets and fairs. People sell intermittent faults phones for top dollar.
Get him to promise the rubber case on the new phone. Otherwise, it WILL slip out his pocket. -and not to walk along, getting run down, whilst watching a Netflix.

Ask him why, why the 6? It's only a tiny bit bigger, and a better tricked camera. The chip won't be the reason, games don't need it. he will only play games, YouTube, and store some content, and text/message his gang. Just like my lads. They even walk around the house with it in one hand, cup in other. AARRGGHHH.

...But it's like us buying an SC. Because it goes like the clappers, and you get all the bells whistles. But you end up driving it like a normal car.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Well, I have just speculatively looked on eBay and then bid for a 4 month old 64GB iPhone 6 Plus which is reportedly unmarked, boxed and has a black screen and silver back... And got it for £322.

I thought I'd done quite well but my wife and older son are saying that I shouldn't have bought it because "a plus" is too big a handset for a 10 year old Embarassed Thud

A 6+ With a 10 yo would be like an iPad on an adult. If you do get a 6 or 6s, let me know as I've got the kind of cases mentioned earlier in this thread. I reckon it'll make the phone pretty much unbreakabe. The only drawback is that it makes the phone unwieldy but you can have it FOC to try it. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Laughing I think, if he likes it, your son will figure out how to make it work. But he may have to go for those REALLY baggy pants to get it in a pocket. Mr. Green
