Yes an another bonus is it not only lightening fast but silent too - no more noisy chattering hard disk looking for fragments of a long lost file....

I've used CCleaner before. Recommended if you have a lot of clutter.

Also, check your startup options. Many programmes "pre-load" and that takes time and resources. MOST (not all) don't need to do this.

Also, the SSD. My laptop got slower and slower. It turned out the (original) HD was failing. Fortunately, I had backed everything up. With a new SSD the improvement is HUGE. I remember needing an address in an email as I was running out the door. Start laptop (Win10), open Outlook, get info, shut down - all about 45 sec total. I hadn't realized, but in a modern computer, a 'regular' HD is, by far, the limiting step when it comes to speed.

(Of course, putting in a new HD, means reinstalling everything. As CTC mentioned, SSD are more expensive than a reg HD of the same size. If cost is an issue, use a smaller SSD only for programmes and the OS. Your files can sit on the reg HD. Loading Windows or Photoshop from and SSD will be hugely faster. Accessing a 100kb Word document is going to be about the same from any HD.

+1 for the solid state drive as your boot drive. My MacBook runs on a solid state drive and it is lightening fast even though it is a couple of years old and 3/4 full of tat. The iMac runs on a standard hd and is much slower even though it is running 24gb of ram.

Adding the SS drive as your main drive should be fairly easy, but don't ask me how as I dont do windows any more.....

I'm sure that there is a programme which can clone your drive to a new drive running in parallel, you should hen just need to tell the bios which drive to boot from. (I think)

Or just use x copy c: d: (or whatever the new drive is called) from the command prompt. This should copy all files from one drive to the new one. (Trying to remember windows stuff, haven't had a Pc for about 5 years) There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The biggest advantage of SSD over spinning rust is that it takes knocks and bumps much better.

For example when usingnit on a train or in a car on the move the spinning rust drive will stop spinning and retract the heads when it detects the slightest bump and thus slow speeds down even more to avoid damage where as ssd's don't.

Miggit, what email program?
Outlook can be exported to a PST file - them re-imported.
Other email clients tend to use files, you just need to copy them.

BTW, I have a few 120GB SSD's (used) here if that's large enough for you.

I'm on Vista and running outlook express.....

And I fear that 120 GB wont be big enough.. my PC's running a 1 TB at the moment.. and while I have moved all the photos and MP3's on to an external drive, I'm still showing 220 GB used, I haven't got the foggiest what is taking all the space... but I think that Rave and the Mercedes WIS aren't helping Wis is best part of 20 GB  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... I used an application called WinDirStat ( https://windirstat.net/index.html ) that scans your disks and gives you a coloured graphical representation of how the disk space is being used up.

That would be brown for mine then!  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Easiest way is to take the old drive out and out it into a caddy which is only £5-10 and then when you have installed your new system just pull the lot over in one fell swoop  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Have a look and see what antivirus program your using, they are responsible for slowing down a lot of computers in my experience.

Kaspersky, Mcafee and Norton are the usual suspects, if you are running an antivirus program, and you should be, disable it and see if that improves the situation. If it does, try Microsofts free antivirus as that doesn't slow things down, if it doesn't then start looking at defragging your hard drive and use C Cleaner to clear out all of the useless stuff that Windows likes to hang on to for whatever reason. Make sure you run both the Windows and registry cleaner and this will take out any redundant software and registry entries. As far as registry entries are concerned, most of the redundant entries get in the way of legitimate entries and slow them down, so it's like going to Edinburgh to get to London from Leeds, hence the slowing down.. ______________________________

You might be on to something there... I've been running PCillin since time and I have had it crash a few times recently.... it seams that every time they come out with the new improved version, and stop supporting the old one, it all rather goes down hill

I'll look in to Mircosoft antivirus, especially if it's free

Just tried without Trend... I reckon that could be the problem, the computer was way faster with it off

What to do now There's no way I want to run without... might reloading Trend, having done a full uninstall help? I'm a bit miffed that the program that I'm paying a small ransom for to protect my computer is slowing it down so much that the computer is almost unusable  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
