What's difference between prop coupling on derv / petrol ?

Hi all, I feel compelled to post this as I have been left feeling shafted by LR......

My front prop coupling failed Rolling Eyes Nothing new about that one Whistle BUT having see a few posts on here that LR would replace the defective front driveline with an improved cv jointed prop, I thought that it could be worth a go..... I wasn't expecting a freebie, but a discounted job would have been nice......

Well according to LR the propshaft upgrade is only for gasoline engines...... well no prizes for guessing where that recall originated Laughing And as such does not not apply to my car as it's a diesel Shocked

So from what I've been told, I can only draw one conclusion, that even though the propshaft and coupling on the petrol and diesel models look the same, are interchangeable with each other and more than likely share the same part numbers...... they are totally different as the petrol one explodes and is eligible for a free replacement, and the diesel one just fails in the same way but totally unconnected so you have to pay for 7 hours and a complete driveline........

Hmmmmm, not sure LR is correct - I have seen a number of posts from people having the coupling replaced under warranty. Not sure if they were petrol or TD6 tho.

I am sure you have searched already but there must be a few examples on here???

Well that's a bit of an eye opener.... I wonder if they were done under the service recall as opposed to a sales warranty.....

I will confess that having done a search for front diff I got totally overwhelmed with hits and lost the will to read Embarassed

This is JLR's response

"Good afternoon Paul,

Thank you for your email.

I can confirm that after investigating this further for you, the Q041 was applicable to vehicles with the Gasoline M62 V8 engine, which I do not believe is manufactured in your vehicle.

Due to this, the Q041 did not apply to your vehicle.

Many thanks,
Amellia"

Followed by......

"Good afternoon Paul,

Thank you for your message.

I can confirm that recalls will be actioned against vehicle's where Land Rover believe necessary, and this differs between models and variants of each model.

Should you be experiencing a concern with your vehicle, I would kindly advise that you book your vehicle into an authorised Land Rover repairer who will be able to complete any repairs if necessary.

Many thanks,
Amellia"

Which I take as your screwed and we'll rob you blind to fix this, but we're not going to admit we got it wrong cos the the US recall has cost us heaps...... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

My TD6 was done as part of the recall . Back in 2008 or whenever it was all pre terrain response cars bar the jag engined cars were considered as at risk of prop shaft failure. 2008 MY Supercharged

Miggit, why not ask Dan to check the part numbers for the 4.4 V8 and the TD6 for your model year. If they turn out to be identical I don't see how JLR could possibly wriggle out of it.

This will be of no comfort to you, but one of the first things I checked on my Td6 was whether it has had the post-mod diff fitted, and yes, it has.

If you're not already aware of it the NHTSA has a useful site http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues which lists all recalls, and most interestingly the various letters which passed between its Office for Defect Investigation and Ford North America as agents for Land Rover.
Obviously because the Td6 wasn't sold in the US its difficult to draw any conclusion about the outcome - but Land Rover were adamant that it wasn't a safety issue, and seemingly when the matter arose in the UK the outcome of the debate with DoT was inconclusive.

There's a statement here http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/d...ecall.html which says that "The program to replace the front drive shaft and drive flange with new parts was technically called a "Service Action" rather than a recall. This apparently means the customer must have the work done within a definite time period for it to be covered. Beginning in May 2008 in the UK and Europe, the program spread to the US in July."

I draw the conclusion that the US Gov't were prepared to be more forceful than were HM Gov't hence Land Rover can now distance themselves and feel no obligation to help you out. How many followers have you got on Twitter? A carefully worded moan on there might just shake them into doing the decent thing - always assuming they've still got spares available.

Well they should have the parts, as all they do is change the prop for the later assembly.

I do get the distinct feeling that they are going to deny all knowledge of the "service recall" and any repairs to a TD6... I wouldn't be going on about so much if it was a straight forward fix, only they have made it so complicated, the only one's who can fix it is themselves Evil or Very Mad And I'd rather be driving a car with one less thing to go wrong.... my nerves are frayed enough without adding exploding diff to the long list of how is the ffrr going to try and kill me today Laughing Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... I've just had a look at the link that Zulu posted, and if you read the Investigations tab, there is no mention whatsoever about petrol or diesel engined cars, just those manufactured at Solihull!

Just spoken with a very nice parts man.......

LR stopped the service recall in 2011, so 5 years down the road I'm afraid to say we're all screwed, and it would take a very friendly dealer to get the job done.... Reckon there's scope for an indy to offer the job at a better price.... Failing that we're either down the S/H route or chancing an after market coupling and hoping for the best.... as there is noway of setting the bearing loads correctly that I know of Sad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... There is talk on forums of being able to reuse a crush washer by adding a shim to it so that it re crushes a little bit more and gets the right preload again.

If it were me, I'd replace the prop with a new style one and try a shim method. V8 or else ...

Service Action Q041 covered both petrol and diesel models. The expiry date was extended many times.

Please forgive me if I have got a firm grasp of the wrong end of the stick, but when you say "no way of setting bearing loads correctly" I presume you mean no way with diff in the vehicle. I know that it's a PITA but have you considered removing the diff and taking it to a specialist?

The place I have in mind is BGH Geartech in Cranbrook - assuming that Brian is still alive of course, God bless him, irascible doesn't do just to him, but he's the only person that I trust with my competition car diffs.
