L322 from 3.6 Tdi to 4.4 Tdi?

Dear Experts,
I was pondering the idea of bartering my 2007 Tdi V8 (very well cared for) for a 2011 version with 178 k km.

As we know, the 2011 version has,
a bigger engine, 4.4 lit. vs. 3.6 lit....
more gears, 8 vs 6...
better consumption...
refined and updated digital dash and interiors...
multiple cameras...
many other technical improvements (better sound insulation?, sequential turbo, upgraded idle system, etc.) .
face lift
this one in particular also has seat cooling.. Smile

Having said that, because we are talking about a substantial amount of money to swap cars, I would like to know if any of you has driven both cars and if, in the end, there is a real tangibile difference. I am particularly interested in terms of ride, comfort, performance, etc. considering also that my 3.6 has been remapped so it is quite sporty....

PS
Dealer says that a complete new engine was fitted on the 4.4. due to turbo breakedown in previous engine. Not sure what to think about that, seems good, but does make one think about the reliability of the turbos in the 4.4.... is this a common issue? I believe the 4.4 has sequential turbo compared to the 3.6.......

Many thanks to all of you who will contribute and give me their valuable opinion, and to all for the attention.
G.

Hmm. I think the big question for how is, "How much more $ is worth it." The 11 is improved in many ways over the 07, but it's still the same car.

I've not driven the 11s, but I drove a lot of 03, 04 and 05s before getting my 08. It really came down to two things: liking to 07+ interior better and a mechanic's recommendation for the Jag V8. As for how they actually drove, there didn't seem to be much difference. I really like to 08, but I still remember test driving a lovely 05 in red with cream interior. Lovely car. I can't say I ever drove an 03-05 and wished, "Gee, I really wish the transmission had more gears." Are any of those improvements "must have"s?

If you like it and can afford it, my all means treat yourself, but I don't think the change will be night and day. For that you need to go to a L405 (good) or a P38 (not as good). Very Happy

Just my opinion and I am a 3.6 driver but I have driven a couple of 4.4 TdV8s and while the gearbox ( for economy ) was way better ( low revs at motorway speed ) and the digital dash is much more advanced in appearance the two cars felt identical

Mine was as smooth to drive and just a quiet One of the owners of a 4.4 drove my 3.6 as was surprised at the lack of difference in the driving and feel of the car. He did remark about the dash being very dated.

I also drive an l405 3.0 recently and was very impressed with the handling and smoothness of the car , it lacked the grunt of my 3.6 BUT maybe that was due to the smoothness. The L405 cost just shy of 100k euro and mine is currently worth , at very best , 20k Euro and even if I could afford the difference , there was not 80k worth of improvement between the two cars.

IMHO the jump in price for a 4.4 over a 3.6 is not justifiable economically but it's your opinion that counts 2015 4.4 AB

Parts of that sum up where I am with this also. I've had my 3.6 for just over 3 years now and normally I'd be looking to change at this point. Having driven a 4.4 and also a 3.0 Disco4 I've decided that there isn't £15k worth of upgrade benefit that I'd notice. They are a more modern vehicle and I am sure many will say 'worlds apart' but IMHO that's simply not true.

The '13 plate 3.0 D4 was very smooth and was sure footed, but not as comfy as my '07 FF. The '11 plate FF was very nice and again very smooth, but the smile was just the same on my face. The digital dash, cameras and DAB were all a bonus but the overall drive left me thinking I'd rather keep the money and retire 12 months earlier instead !! Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

This makes for a very interesting read, I too have had my 3.6 just over 3 years and so far it's been brilliant apart from a couple of very minor little things which you'll get with any motor. I've been reading how much the 4.4 owners generally love theirs, including our illustrious Moderator Stan and it got me wondering if it's worth moving on - but honestly I'm so happy with my 3.6 I cannot see any point, the differences are simply not worth so much money IMHO, but then as ever it's personal choice - you pays ya money and takes ya choice!

I went from a 2003 TD6, and it's a different car that just shares the same body. The 4.4 is epic. I know you were asking about changing from a 3.6, but I've only ever driven one about 8 years ago at Eastnor Castle....

If you want the last of the L322 evolution, it's the way you need to go. If not, keep what you have and skip to an L405 at a later date.

I don't regret my decision.

I also went from an early td6 to the 4.4tdv8 to get the last of the 322 shape, mainly because of the quontam leap in price 322 to 405. After 18 months of use, I certainly have no regrets.
If I had seen a late 3.6 td v8 in extra special condition, I would have bought it and banked the difference to keep it running for two or 3 years.

I have owned a (04)4.4 petrol a (05)Td6 and a remapped 3.6tdv8 (albeit in a sport) and now a (11) 4.4tdv8. On paper my remapped 3.6 was as powerful as my 4.4 tdv8 but it certainly doesn't feel like it. My 4.4tdv8 is WAY quicker and i never got more than 26mpg from my sport whereas last weekend i did 700 miles in my new one and got almost 32mpg average over the weekend Shocked . Though i suspect the extra MPG is down to the fact its only doing just over 1100rpm at 70mph with the 8 speed Thumbs Up Paul

To be honest if your wanting it for evonomynt might be the better choice but if you want a more reliable vehicle my advice is the 5:0 be it NA or SC outside of the UK as we've seen already the 4.4 has issues that while often sorted in warranty don't bode well for owners of used ones.
Yes I know you don't get the 8 speed box but 2extra gears I can live without if I don't need to worry about a turbo or two going and the same for the EGr's and their coolers and all the extra pipework and sensors...

When I finally upgrade a 100k+ 5.0sc 322 or 405 is going to be my only choices. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Owned both a 3.6 and a 4.4

It really does depend on what you are expecting. The 4.4 is a much better drivetrain. The gearbox is a lot smother and the engine is a damn site more powerful! And it's a little quieter.

The dash is better, with the digital display, and it handles slightly better down to the adaptive dampers.

BUT

Everything else is the same. And the 4.4 seems to have its own problems, none of which are terminal at present, the turbos issues on the 3.6 are less evident on the 4.4, but there are oils seal issues, and the oil coolers seem to made of cheese. But apart from these problems they seem to be more robust.

I went from a vogue to a vogue. So the seats were the same, and in general the trim is the same.
The infotainment system has better graphics, and you can connect an iPod, but it's still not great, it sounds pretty mch the same as the one in the 2008, you get DAB but Inthe sticks it drops out a far amount and the fM is as good. Also don't forget the nav. Rubbish as it is in both cars, you can at least get update discs from various nefarious sources for buttons. The new nav needs a dealer update. Which is ££

I reckon you have to drive a few 4.4s then make a decision. For me my 3.6 was good mechanically but needed some cosmetics and the Firenze red 4.4 at the dealers was really shiny. And that pretty much cliched it.....

The 5.0 SC isn't problem free either with timing chain issues which can be expensive. You pays your money etc..... Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Well, I've had 2 of the 3.6 models, then 2 5.0 SC cars and now a L405 4.4 diesel.

So, never having owned a l322 4.4 TDV8 I can't pass comment on that model and of course the L405 is lighter than the 322 but the 4.4 SDV8 in mine is really rather good. It's a lovely balance of power and economy and much more low down torgue than my 5.0 S/C ever had.

I recall the 3.6 being very torquey to drive and the fuel economy wasn't bad, sort of 26 ish as an average. But, the main difference is the 8 speed gearbox. It's so much smoother having the 8 speed than the older 6 speed, doesn't suffer with the 2-1 downshift problems which LR never really solved 100% and it does make economy quite a lot better with the extra tall gearing in 8th.

But, having said all of that, parting with a chunk of cash to get a newer L322 needs a lot of thinking about, especially now 405's are coming down a bit. All you're getting is a newer version so it would depend on how much that's worth to you. I like the digital dash and the hard disk navigation was much better to use. Other than that there isn't much on the inside to shout about. A bit more sleek outside with the facelift. But the main change is the engine and box.

Just one other thing, I *think* the 2011 4.4 diesel was a TDV8, not the SDV8. i.e. not sequential turbocharging. Might be worth checking that, not that there's anything wrong with that but the SDV8 is the later spec.

Personally, if I was heavily budget minded I would run a 15k 3.6 rather than a more expensive 4.4. And 111K miles is high for a 4.4. Never mind the engine, remember the entire rest of the car has done that as well. New wine, Old bottles etc.

^the TDV8 still has sequential turbos, a small one at lower revs and then a larger one which kicks in at higher (over2500) rpm.

they just remapped it for the L405, may be a bit of tinkering around but fundamentally then same drivetrain as in the 405. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I thought ours had a parallel / sequential turbo setup where a big one is normally used but then a smaller one comes in at the same time to help out at higher revs.....I can't find where I read it....some technical review.... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Surely the smaller one would be there all the time and for lower rev and quicker pickup and the big one for high revs Smile
