It's how they classify oil..... yes it is equivalent oil, and is compatible with the correct oil BUT it doesn't have the necessary additives to protect the 5HP24....

Doesn't matter what it says on the can... if it's not Mobil LT71141 then it IS damaging your gearbox or at the least reducing it's life....

LT71141 oil is straw coloured, they don't make it in any other colour... Pete

There is only one Mobil LT71141, that stuff you linked to says it's compatible with it and it is, it won't harm it at all... it doesn't replace it though... don't think Mobil will tell you what additives the oil has, it was made for ZF specifically for the 5HP24 when they decided to have the (IMHO potty) slipping TC to smooth the gearchanges....

No disrespect meant here but if we don't know what is in it you/we can't know if another company has licensed or copied the identical formula. I emailed liqui-moly regarding their product. They have 2 categories for this equivalent. The fact that the ZF 5hp24 is not listed under the approvals section concerns me.

I did look into this prior to making a decision some years ago.

Keeping in mind this is only for the 1200 fluid which is for the 5HP.
Liquimoly manufacture 6 synthetic transmission fluids last time I looked, the standard BMW LT 71141 I believe is all we need be concerned with here. Granted the standard would be a bench mark ie a low bar for certification meeting this standard. Liquimoly is a German company and this product is actually made in Germany.
The feed stock for this fluid would most likely only come from one manufacturer other resellers can ad what they like to it even COLOUR it.
You can actually get this product in a Yellow fluid.........it has the same specs.
I am paying just under $AUD 20 for a litre

The first time I drained my trans and dropped the pan off the fluid was very dark (filthy) As I say 3 years later all is well, I will be doing another change soon which should see the fluid improve some more.

Looking at the TE ML 11 Mobil is not listed at all for the 5HP24 . I would think if Mobil brand of LT 71141 was the original and best product ZF would have listed it by name.
The link above talks about fluid longevity. I've been using Febi brand and at $10 US a liter I'll happily change out 4 liters every 15k miles just in case.

Yes I see what you mean re the Mobil product, it doesnt have the 11A (which the Top Tech 1200 Liquimoly) rating, which gives it the thermal stability from what I read of it.
Obviously with our engines normal running range in excess of 105c thermal stability is what you are looking for.

I have never been a fan of Mobil products anyways as an example I consider Mobil 1 to be a well over priced engine oil with poor performance for a synthetic oil.

This is all secret Land Rover business, they dont like people working on their own vehicles.
Keeping the punters confused is their trade and profit.

Doclees, I do the same as you with regard to fluid changes on the trans, I am running a P38 with nearly 400,000km on it and have been applying this practice to it for the last 16 years, original trans, its still shifts like new.
To be honest I dont think you need to flush the trans just drop the fluid and take a look at whats really going on every 12 months or so.

I have always had Landrovers for my outback expeditioning over 30 years now and I operate in some pretty remote areas, being able to repair or patch up a failing vehicle is a major advantage the L322 tests this to the limit, yes they are reliable if well understood and maintained but I think they are the last FF that will be use full in outback situations a P38 is far more serviceable and better still a manual TDI Disco.

Just can't see the point of using an oil that "maybe" ok when it's not hard to get the correct oil that you "know" is ok, it's not even a massive saving when you compare it with the cost of a new transmission....

It's a bit like the argument about OE and non OE parts, for example, you can get an original rear hub bush for about £30 or you can get a Britpart special for about £3, they are both made of metal and rubber, they both look the same the manufacturers say they will both fit and do the job.... from experience I "know" that the cheap ones will last less than a year if you use your FF off road at all, the genuine ones last for years and years.... So, is it really worth saving £27 when changing them??

The point I was trying to get across with the oil is that no one really knows if there is another oil that is exactly the same, manufacturers will claim anything to sell their products, because, let's face it, who can dispute it, we don't have the facilities or the knowledge to argue that what they are saying is true or not.....

Just after I left school I worked in a petrol station, they were selling 2,3,4 and 5 star leaded petrol at that time but when the tanker pulled up I noticed that he filled all the tanks with the same petrol, when I asked why I was told that the specifications of the different octane ratings had such a large variation built in that they just used 4 star for all of them and no one could prove that the petrol wasn't what it was sold as..... Pete

The difference between ''Specifications and Approvals'' and ''Recommendations'' is, that the Specifications and Approvals are tested by the OEM and the Recommendations we as the manufacturer guarantee for the usability. In some cases like for the approval LT 71141 it is not possible to get the approval from the OEM, so we have to write it under ''Recommendations''.

All our products are tested and are safe to use. The Top Tec ATF 1200 is absolutly suitable for ZF 5HP gearboxes.

Ask him to guarantee that it has exactly the same additives as LT71141, be interesting to read his reply.... as I said, they will say anything because you can't prove otherwise.... it is not any ones job to ensure that their claims are true....

So as i do more research it gets more convoluted. I go to Exxon/mobil to find info. They do not list 71141. Not a US product. Seems to me if ZF only wanted Mobil brand 71141 in there transmissions that is what you would find in the dealerships. Then again they said it was a sealed for life transmission.
Further sources list Fuchs of Germany as the manufacturer of esso and Mobil brand 71141. I'm still trying to find out who makes it for Febi and if it is licensed or if a license is even still needed.
One should keep in mind that 71141 is a 20+ year old semi synthetic product. I can't imagine there hasn't been an improved version by now.
Elsewhere one source said the red color in the fluid is nothing more than color dye.
