TD6 alternator rebuild questions

My alternator has packed up after 137,000 miles. I believe it to be the original but cannot confirm. Its a Valeo YLE 500051.

A new genuine item is out of the question so I have 2 choices. Cheap after market item or rebuild my own. Obviously I prefer to rebuild my own. Im handy with spanners so thats not a problem. Finding good quality replacement parts is the tricky bit.

Any advice from someone whos done it.? Where to source parts.? Any known failure component in these.? Etc

Thanks. 2002 TD6 Epsom Green

Ask these guys, they can usually help...

If light came on it's usually brushes, if it didn't then it's usually the diodes, I'd change the lot and the bearings....

Thumbs Up Pete

It's very easy to do, done loads... sometimes the bearings can be a pain but to be fare they are much better than they used to be so left a lot of them alone...

We rebuilt one at a play day a few weeks back, one of the brushes had snapped clean off, managed to rob another one out of an old electric motor, cut it with side cutters until it fitted and pushed it in on top of the broken original... Censored thing only worked perfectly... and was still going two weeks later when swapped....

It's amasing what you can bodge up when you need to... Pete
