Red oil coming out of zf 5hp24 gearbox

Hi. Changing transmission oil today on a zf 5hp24 gearbox. I have the correct Mobil ATF LT 71141 fluid.

However. The stuff that's coming out looks red, why would that be and is it safe to put my correct oil in considering not all the oil comes out of the box?

At least is IS red, and not black!

I had my 2008 Discovery gearbox megaflushed the other week, the new ATF was a golden colour, not red, I was told the red stuff was just on the older boxes.

Couple of pictures showing red oil on tissue. Hacked at sump filler plug so someone has been at it before and the plate on side of gearbox, there is 4 on end I just didn't get the picture right.

Red fluid usually means Dexron, or one of the ‘multi-purpose’ inventory reduction fluids. Oh dear Sad

The damage it has caused will depend on how far your controller adaptions were able to stretch to try to accommodate the (inappropriate) friction characteristics of the fluid.

Eventually got it all back together. Main aim of the job was to change the transmission oil temperature harness, that was no problem,a little fiddly in parts. I didn't count on there being a different oil in the sump or somebody using sealant on both sides of a gaskets. Managed to get most of it off or smooth enough. There doesn't appear to be any leaks so far. The liquid that came out seamed to be fairly clean and not much metal fragments on the magnets.
Got 5 litres of oil out and 5 litres of new in but it didn't dribble out,I expect that's because I spilt a bit of the old so there was probably just a little over 5 litres come out. I knew I should have gotten an extra litre.

However am thinking that maybe another oil change should be done so there's more of the correct fluid in there or maybe even a full flush. What do folks reckon?

What milage have you got?
Sounds like you have just acquired the FF?
If fluid is looking very red and you have clean magnets a major service has been done on the trans recently?

most likely you have had a major service done on the trans then.
at that milage the original fluid would look very dark indeed.....bordering on black.
as already reported make sure you use LT 71141 fluid

Forgot to say, my fluid is a cherry colour LT 71141 fluid.....I use Liqimoly product.
If you are not experiencing any problems with the trans it is most likely the correct fluid.

When I bought it the garage said it looked like it had a new box on it but no paperwork to back it up. Yeh am using the correct fluid. The harness I replaced looked old though.

This is good to know. Didn't know any were colored other than that golden color.

If it's cherry colour then it is definitely not the correct fluid, it might be advertised as compatible or equivalent but it will not have the correct friction modifiers unless it is genuine Mobil LT71141, which is straw coloured.... Thumbs Up Pete

You may not have had any issues yet but if the fluid is any other colour than straw and is not the Mobil LT71141 then you are destroying your transmission from the inside. The ZF units will ONLY work (and survive) with the correct oil. Non genuine oils basically wear away the internal part costings. (As kindly shown by RRPhil) and are breaking down due to the incorrect friction material. The fluid is quite expensive but this is for a reason, if you have any other oil you should really get is flushed and changed straight away.....if it's not too late! Speak to RRPhil about this as he is the ultimate expert in this field.

The liqimoly does list LT 71141 applications with this product.
