Was away for the weekend off roading up near Newcastle, on the way home had a bong of doom and up pops

"Selflevel susp inact" and "max speed 35mph" and all the EAS lights went out, so as usual I totally ignored it and drove 100 miles home at normal speed and everything worked fine, got home and got out of it, shut the door and it levelled itself...!!!

Got round to plugging the IID in today and it is showing front left and rear right height sensor faulty but now the EAS light is back on and everything works fine, goes up to off road and down to access no problems and readings from height sensors are all good...

It does make some sort of sense as I have changed the other two sensors within the last year so the two faulty ones are originals, just funny it hasn't dropped or raised a corner and it now works fine....

Anyway, thought I'd put the info on here for others if needed... Two new height sensors ordered and it should be fine...!! Pete

Hi Pete as you know I just replaced a load of suspension parts too and from this one and my p38 have noticed that for me anyway the rears went first then the fronts about 6 months later
I know you will sort it

Oh it's not an issue, just putting some info on for others as it's a weird fault to get with a failing sensor, usually the corner at fault goes all the way up or down.....

The sensors are well below the maximum wading depth so are waterproofish, these will just be worn out, after all they do move all the time you are driving so will give up sooner or later...

New ones turned up today, probably fit them tomorrow... Pete

Pete, when you change the sensors, does the suspension need re calibrating (as per the Disco 2) or will it be ok?

To be honest I didn't bother with the other two as it was close enough... Probably do it now I've changed them all, only takes 10mins with the IID tool once you get your head round it...  Pete

Thanks. I had a similar issue pulling the tin tent at spring bank. Pulled out of a service station a bit quick and got all the bongs. No performance issues just the message "Only normal ride height available" or something similar and all the EAS led's out. Got to the site and switched it off while I booked in and when I re started her everything was back to normal and has been since.

Any chance of a little rundown on how to change the Height Sensors?

Thinking of changing my rear ones, the near side is raising about 15mm higher than the spec stated.

It's very easy, you don't even have to jack it up or take a wheel off... stick it in off road height, open a door (not the boot) and also stick an axle stand underneath just to be safe, find the sensor, it has an arm fixed to the lower suspension arm, unplug the electrics, remove the nut from the arm, remove the two screws holding it on and remove it, refit the same way, you have to be a bit careful with the wiring plug, they get hard and are difficult to pull off, if they break or the plugs look corroded you can buy the plug with a short loom from the dealer and splice it into the old loom. The wiring is tye wrapped to the subframe and it can be easier to cut them off and refix after..

Fronts are very similar...

Don't think I'd bother to change them if they are not broken though, if it's out of spec then get it re set Pete

It does appear simple, when I get back to Uganda, I'll take a look.

Are you suggesting given that one sensor is out not to bother changing at this time?

I can deflate the system with Hawkeye and then see what happens.

Sorry didn't read it properly, if one is out then change it and I suppose changing the others to preempt any further issues in your neck of the woods would be prudent...

The IID tool can turn the system off and then inflate or deflate specific corners so if you have a sensor fail miles from home you can still level the FF and drive it, very handy feature...  Pete

I also had a "height sensor activity invalid" today, but the EAS inactive message disappeared after turning car off/on. Does this mean I need a new sensor?

Cleared fault, hasn't come back yet. 2004 L322 V8

chex, sorry missed your post, I have now changed all 4 of mine, they all gave a warning before failing completely...

Roverlord, that will clear some faults but I doubt it will repair a hall effect sensor which is what the height sensors are... they move all the time you are in motion and just wear out...

What you have described is the procedure to reset the steering angle sensor when you have disconnected the battery...  Pete
