P0705 transmission code

Evening gents and ladies .

Out today in my 2006 (56) sc ffrr . Not my daily car. I decided to drive the car in sport mode to help charge the battery (raised rpm) as the car has been stood for most the week, not hammering the car.

I got a notification and the car went into limp mode.
I got home and used a code reader to investigate. Below is what I got. I have cleared the code and drove the car around the block without any issue. I've Googled the code and I'm a little unsure of the possibilities.
Would be grateful for some not to technical advise .

Can't help with the code, could be the result of the low battery... If it doesn't return forget about it....

But

No need to raise revs to charge the battery, modern cars will be at full charge rate at just off tickover.... Thumbs Up Pete

Although that error code is not uncommon on pre-’06 petrol models which have an externally mounted inhibitor switch, it’s much less common on the 6-speed transmission as the switch is internal

Hopefully it’s just your battery charging level that’s causing the issue and it won’t reoccur. Otherwise you may need to remove the Mechatronic unit and clean the switch contacts.

Thanks Phil. As said , I've erased the code and I need to take it out on a longer journey , the RR is my weekend toy and doesn't get used much.
I will update later.

evening all and a very merry christmas.

so far i encounter this trans failsafe code above at least once a month in any driving mode and at any speed, ive also once had this happen whilst stood still waiting at traffic lights . on this occasion i was sat at the traffic lights and the rangie felt like it lowered slightly and pinged and ponged and went into limp mode. same code as above came up. I cant say if the rangie drops in height whilst on the move as trans failsafe comes on nor can i make it happen on request.

in the time ive been trying various fixes, ive replaced the gearbox oil and filter, new battery and had the alternator checked .

my failing is i know nothing of electrics , i need help.!.

A seized gear selector can cause this issue. Is the lever nice and free to move back and forward, or does it feel stiff/notchy at all?

no, gear selector is smooth. ive tried the HDC switch that works ive also used the low/high range switch and i can hear the low box engage and drive in low box . all seems to work as one would expect

Trying to work out when i started getting this p0705 transmission failsafe . could changing the gearbox oil and filter ? not long after purchasing this car i spotted a oil leak from the gearbox electrical connector sleeve. its possible that this p0705 error may have started after this oil change.

i will check the oil level first, Do you think it would be wise to do another oil and filter change?

the parts i used on the first gearbox are i the link.

do i order the same again?

P0705 issues are relatively common on the 5-speed ZF units as the inhibitor switch is mounted externally (i.e. vulnerable to the elements) and the L1 to L4 logic function is achieved using sprung fingers mounted on a wiper sliding across contacts.

For the 6-speed unit ZF moved away from an external switch with contacts and instead integrated the position switch into the electronic control module which also contains the transmission control unit (ECU) which is coded to the vehicle.

Unlike for the 5-speed, therefore, it’s not simply a question of sourcing a replacement switch. For the 6-speed the complete Mechatronic unit would have to be replaced and then re-coded to the vehicle.

The 6-speed position switch appears to be a ‘Hall effect’ type where you can see, in the photos, what appears to be 4 strips of magnets in the sliding part (attached to the transmission’s manual valve and guided by the rooster comb) which generates the L1 to L4 logic in the fixed part without any physical contact.

It seems hard to imagine therefore what could have gone wrong with this sealed and non-contacting arrangement in your particular case, but I would suggest that it’s worth at least taking the slider out and cleaning it?

One other thing I did think about, though – as it’s a well-known issue with the 6HP26 - is that the cable trunnion (which clamps the selector cable to the selector lever at the transmission end) corrodes and seizes in its hole, preventing the trunnion from articulating as the lever moves through its arc.

Potentially I guess this could mean that the lever might rotate to a position beyond which it was designed to go and the slider may therefore register a linear position outside of its normal range? Anyway, this may certainly be an initial place to look as it wouldn’t cost anything to fix.

Phil

Phil, thanks for the pointers. my intention today (28/12/16) is to get under the rangie and check oil level, any wire connectors i may have disturb on the original gearbox service and the cable you have indicated above.

after that , i will be seeking outside help.

again Phil, thanks for taking the time to explain at a depth you have about the internal workings, i dont think i would want to takle removing the slider plate as you suggested, this i think is outside my knowledge. i will be leaving that to a professional.

thanks, Craig.
