Hi all,

Put my L322 TD6 in for MOT, and to my surprise she passed first time! Very happy, but coming up from a 4.6 V8 P38 its all a bit new and I'm a bit apprehensive about it all

Few little niggles I'd welcome any advice / links / comments:

- when sitting at a constant speed, if I want to accelerate even the tiniest bit the engine literally roars, only above say 40 but almost like kickdown, but not quite as powerful... Is this normal for these cars?

- drivers side mirror doesn't stay in on power fold, but there is also a bit of movement on it when it's out, I'm guessing some bit of plastic inside is worn / snapped?

- squeak / rattle when turning the wheel, coming from the front suspension I believe, there are a few knocks from the front suspension which were not picked up on MOT, but haven't had a chance to check myself yet!

- finally, the rear parking sensors, one moment they work, next my code reader says left, then centre left, I'm guessing it will be a problem with the loom judging by previous threads as one moment it clicks, the next time it won't (different sensors)!

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to the car and paranoid something is going to go wrong with the gearbox, will change the fluid soon and give the car a service, but did 70 miles today and everything seemed ok except above... And the rear brows squeak when slowing down (some clown forgot to grease the callers )

Maybe change the torque converter if it's high mileage and hasn't been done. On the TD6 they go without warning and take the box along with them.

Roaring engine:

TD6 can be a bit noisy on acceleration, but could be the TC or the viscous fan (you could simply remove the fan and see if things improve without it, a TD6 will run quite happily without a VF.

Squeak & Rattle

Could be steering rack, could be brake mudshields rattling, could be ARB links, could be suspension bushes, all covered on here somewhere

Mirror

Sounds like the motor has gone , a good howto on here for a DIY repair. Also try the double tap on the fold button trick, this sometimes resolves mirror issues

Parking sensors

Your guess sounds like the right direction, if it is intermittent and keeps swapping around, loom or ECU are the likely culprits

Gearbox

Yes, change the transmission fluid and filter as soon as you can, then change it again after a couple of weeks. You will not get it all out first time around. Check for metal in the fluid, if it looks like metallic paint then there could be worse to come. The gearboxes are a bit flakey, but with regular servicing and fluid change, they do seem to hold up?

Regarding the torque converter, the car is on 140,000miles so without a receipt I wouldn't know, but would guess if it was going to, it probably would have been changed?

Not sure if it's supposed to be changed as a service item at specific mileage. On the TD6 they give no warning when they go, on the 4.4 they start vibrating and slipping but the TD6 box is damped so you don't feel it until its gone. 2004 L322 V8

Hi stacker, when your cruising at say 60mph, is the rev counter reading about 2,000 rpm, if it is then your in tc lockup, any higher say 2500 -3000rpm, the tc is not locked up. As an observation mine doesn't particularly roar, but is chipped, which I believe makes the gear changes better.
another clue is fuel consumption , what's the screen saying, I know these can be a bit out.

One thing ticked off the list now, is the mirror. It was moving by probably half an inch everytime I accelerated or brakes, I had a look on the wiki, and discovered that I pop the cap off the bottom, and the four torx screws weren't tight. Tightened them up and all is good now, I love an easy fix.

Greg: I'm not sure actually, I haven't taken much notice but next time I use the car I will check and report back. I'm pretty sure when i'm just cruising along the revs are quite low, it's only when I accelerate the smallest bit they fire up!!
Fuel consumption - It's reading about 19mpg at the moment, but as some clown has fitted an aftermarket stereo, I haven't been able to reset this I believe, so that is since changing the battery and the car has been doing quite a bit of idling, when doing diagnostics and for the MOT. The gearbox doesn't appear to have any fault codes which I'm hoping is a good start.

Regard to the chip, buying a second hand vehicle I will never know if it's been chipped or not, but I guess that could be a possibility if it's not normal td6 behaviour, I will have a look around and see if anything looks suspicious!

Forgot you had hse, but 19 mpg seems a little low, mine reads 28 to 30 if not more in the summer.
Has it been de egr'd.? If not you will find a huge difference in performance and mpg.
