Would any of you wise men be able to give me some advice, please
My son is doing his drivers licence and I wonder if this is something for him.

If you/he can afford the insurance, then lucky him! Thumbs Up

Yes, they are reliable IF you choose carefully, and IF you are prepared to spend the money to look after it. Great vehicles, but be under no illusions, they're not cheap to run. Pop over to Disco3.co.uk and have a good read. Notably, look up the oil pump/cam belt tensioner issue and look for the transmission to have been serviced. Too old? Nope - in fact, 05/06MY vehicles tend to be better and they like to be used regularly so a reasonable mileage is also a good thing.

Buy carefully and enjoy. Smile Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Maybe your son is mature for his age and a sensible driver, but thinking of myself or any of my friends at that age behind the wheel of a big powerful tank like this is a scary thought. Lada Niva is a great idea, cheap, slow but retro cool. Put two Rhodeasian Ridgebacks in a Range Rover and pretty soon it's their Ridge Rover.

How old is he ?

Certainly in England, it would be prohibitively expensive to insure for a new driver on a private policy.

Learners get cheaper insurance as there is always a qualified driver sitting next to them - it's when they pass their test that the costs rocket.

personally i would buy him an old car thats not worth a great deal of money because as i'm sure most of us have done he will dent it scrape it or write it off within the first couple of years .

Up here in Aberdeen there is always accidents in the papers with teenagers getting killed due to their parents buying them cars that are totally unsuitable for a first car it used to be subaru impreza's now they have moved onto Audis L322 2008 vogue

I quite like the Dacia Duster at £9495...

If 4x4 insurance is high then brand new Sandero at £5995...

If you have a budget of the £11.5k that D3 is at then I'd be thinking of a £6-7k car and some spare for maintenance, servicing etc. You don't say how old your son is; is he a teenager and this is his first car or is he a mature chap who has just decided to do his test now? You know him best so if a D3 is the one, I'd go for it....however adverts that say things like "people think this looks £30k" make me cringe...if it's an honest car, just be honest!

Some good FL2's out there also, cheaper insurance obviously, not as capable off road but good all the same Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Thanks for your kind reactions Thumbs Up Was out and just got back. My son will be 18, I let him drive my classic and vintage cars, he even drives my rhd Range Rover. He is far more sensible than I ever was. So I am not to worried about his driving. I would never give him a small car, for daily driving. He never got a motorbike or scooter or something like that for the same safety reasons. France is well known for it's huge amount of bike accidents. Main reason for asking was not his way of driving Whistle but the reliability and your experience with that kindof car. Lada = never, hate it. He might like it though Big Cry Thanks again guys Thumbs Up

Get a chair, and use it whilst getting some insurance quotes.

Then get him a used 1 litre tin can car, and review the situation after 1 clean year. Only a used one, that doesn't need souping up. IE a boring colour etc.

He needs to get his first years clean driving record, on his own insurance.
If you put him on your insurance, , you are at a huge risk. And he will never move on.

How can I beat all those experienced parents? That you are worried about my wallet is really (I'm serious) touching me. Reading between the lines I must be stubborn or an idiot, or both, to get him a car that big. Maybe you are right. I'll have another night of sleep before I decide.... Bow down
