Canada 2008 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Java Black

Ah, you think UK. Defender prices are high? For a laugh, check out the Canadian ones. (Remember, JLR only ever imported 25 110s to Canada!) It's supply and demand gone mad.

Now, take a look at the prices in the USA. Far, far worse. We can import them at 15 years, but the Anericans must wait 25 and are not allowed and non-period modifications. No galvanized chassis, no replacing 2 1/4 petroleum with tdis.

From what I see, here are the two big reasons for the Defender prices (in countries where you can actually buy them).
1. Who wants a new Defender? Off-roading? Dogs? Horses? Caravans? Most people who will use a Defender for what it's designed for would love to buy a cheaper, 2-3 yr old, well maintained Defender and save some £. There's nothing a 2015 Defender can do that a 2012 can't do just as well. JLR doesn't sell a lot new, so supply is always less than the demand.
2. The old ones don't look old. However old your Defender is, a quick rummage though a parts bin, a respray and a non-dated reg number and you can fool everyone that it's brand new.

Mr. Green Just my 2p.

I've told this story on here before...

I always wanted one.

I was on a friend's estate in Northumberland and we had to split up to go Duck flighting. I was told to take one of the keepers' Defenders. Coming back in the dark, we came to a fork in the road. What the rather dim headlights failed to illuminate was that the road actually branched right and that the straight ahead was a dead end. I realised just in time and swung the wheel to make the right turn as I would in the Rangie.

Mistake. Big mistake.

It was no Rangie.

The combination of off-road tyres and 1940's chassis technology, along with wet Tarmac ,meant that the back end decided it would try to get in front of the front end. I was staring at a dry stone wall that didn't look too friendly and was approaching at 30mph.

Underpants immediately went to DefCon 5.

I caught that slide but the momentum brought the back end round the other way. I caught that too. But I was now in the mother of tankslappers.

I eventually gathered it all up and sorted it out. The chaps' banter in the car was rather absent for the next few miles.

I still like the look of them.

The driving experience? Not so much.

That said, during the summer, I was walking past the Stratstone Dealership in Mayfair and there was a Bowler Defender. I had a quick nose around it. It was £49,900. It looked the dog's.

If a salesman had walked by at that moment, it would probably now be on the drive...

Thankfully my phone rang and I had to go back to the office.

That's odd!
I find that as I turn sharp right as I enter my gate in order to have the cars facing the correct way to make a swift exit (!) it is the Range Rover which seems much more likely to take the corner off the house than the Defender.. Confused
The Defender has much less castor steering self centre than most modern cars, which means you have to make a real effort to unwind the lock on corner exit....but maybe as a I'm used to large vehicles, I never have found the lock an issue Smile
