why are some Defenders are worth more than range rovers?

i know very little about Defenders, other than, i dont need one, or even want one...
but, i was talking with a guy the other day, and his defender was 'twice the value of my old 2002' he said. (10k! defender!) i sort of looked puzzled and looked a couple up. they fetch huge sums, -for a tractor! and there are loads of them around. he said, its because they are a better car than the series LR, with coils instead of leaf springs etc. and im sure it can 'go anywhere' maybe it has traction control, locking diffs etc. i dont know...

its not like they are the 'CSK' of the range rover world are they?

what's the draw?

As the Defender has only just stopped or about to stop, production, it stands to reason that a new or nearly new one would be worth twice that of a 2002 FF.

Of course, there's far more to it than that. Si. <This is my name.

The result of a perfect marketing, I suspect.

I had one for years and it cost me dear, financially and physically (deafness and arthritis). It is a paradox that most owners of ageing Defenders and the pre '83 90&110) will acknowledge the many shortcomings, faults, poor reliability and high running costs yet still say they are better than anything else from LR or any other make. They leak like sieves, are noisy in the extreme and need constant love and attention.

I don't think you are missing anything because there is no logic to it at all.

Mine doesn't leak like a sieve, isn't remotely unreliable or in need of constant TLC. And nor am I in denial. And mine isn't as noisy as you describe.

Then again, I've only owned mine for 10 years and driven it across many countries and much terrain. What would I know? Very Happy Si. <This is my name.

All cars depreciate at different rates and for different reasons.
Defenders plateaued a while ago due to their desirability, If ten years ago a station wagon was £10k it probably would still make that if looked after.
Yes they are noisy, slow, fit and finish is years out of date and if you are tall a PITA to drive (they are the only vehicle built twice and basically by hand) but they have a huge following and the end of production will help values even more. Mine was a blue one! Smile

There's a 110 defender by me on a 56 plate at 17k which looked a lot of money to me for a workhorse Shocked _____________________________________________________

I'm with you on this one Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I've had my 56 plate TD5 hard top for over 2 years and its been brilliant in every respect - its cost's very little to run and is worth now (at least) what I paid for it in Oct 2013 - not sure you'd be able to say that about many other 'current' cars Whistle

Plus it outperforms my RR in the snow hands down (admittedly on more appropriate tyres) Whistle

^ yep I'm in the same boat as you also, our 110 does what it says on the tin....leak....well it does not leak when it rains but the condensation is something else!
And been a v8 who needs sound deadening anyway Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

I had been looking at another 110 to replace the FF, just to see what outs there mind, why they are so much second hand who know. I can only guess is the demand for them out strips supply, especially the td5 as they where the better engine ( except the v8 of course Whistle ) If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

I bought mine a year or so ago I've spent a fair few quid on it to make the car i want and its gone up in value Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Whistle

Mine is not noisy and is not slow either. Leather heated seats, heated screen, air con, fully sound proofed and lots more. its a great short journey car but wouldn't want to drive it around the world. 2020 Porsche Panamera Turbo Hybrid (V FAST)

My brother in law has 1998 50th anniversary Defender with the 4 litre petrol engine and automatic gearbox. A quick look on Autotrader shows two of these currently on sale, the cheapest being nearly £23000! Censored

I've had 5 Range Rovers (classics, P38s & L322) 4 Discos (300, TD5s & 3) and 3 Deafners (TD5 90 HT, 2.4 DC & 2.2 90 HT).

I traded my last FFRR into my current 2.2 90 HT and I suspect I'll be in the Deafner for some time - they're great.

Not slow - no sir!! Many think they are until I disappear into sunset Thumbs Up
Uncomfortable? - you can alter it as much as you want to make it as comfy as you like.
Noisey - Hell Yes!! It's great Thumbs Up I'm so in touch with what it's doing.

My circumstances suit the Deafner better - farmer / equestrian - but to put it into perspective ask yourself this:
How many ladies have come up to your FFRR and given it a hug?? I had two on one day Laughing Back in a Defender!!

It rather depends on what you look like, I myself, get the odd hug... But the car (FFRR) has had none, so far. Laughing

Last Deafners to come out of LodeLane on January 29th.
Then Pause until new model in 2018.

Death of an icon and all that makes it attractive for the die hards.

My stealer had four of the last models and all were sold within half a day.

They are advertised new for nearly double their factory prize tag now and still people will buy them.

Simply unbelievable, but thats marketing I guess.

Once the new models runs out of the factory doors, and if they get t right, there will be normal peives for old workhorses again.
Hopefully they will have the new model made for standard mid european people including somewhat bellied out persons and a proper seating position wih at least some basic ergonomics, then the new model will be a huge success.
I am looking forwqrd to it.

That's why I offroad an L322, can't afford a 90 or 110

Plus the L322 will go further off road in standard trim, with road tyres, than a 90 will, I know, I followed one around tong and did all the bit's he failed on, he was rather pi55ed off....

Overpriced uncomfy noisy, and that's the good points.....

Jayboy, I know yours isn't but it's not exactly standard... Thumbs Up Pete
