Transmission Problem

Driving home in my December 2003 RR Vogue (3Tdr) and it lost forward motion! On the motorway hard shoulder it would only drive in reverse. 141k miles with full service history and gear box oil & filter changed at 103k. Anyone any ideas what the problem is and likely cost to repair fearing the worst Sad

Anywhere from low on oil, cheap fix, to new box, £1,500...

If it does need a new box then only use somewhere recommended there are a lot of rubbish places around...

Good luck... Thumbs Up Pete

i have to agree i'm afraid sounds like its a rebuild or a new box, expensive either way.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I will hopefully know by COB tomorrow what the problem & proposed solution is when I will post an update. I just spent £300 having a squib replaced as the Airbag light was staying on and it would have failed the pending MOT.

UPDATE

Car started and both drove into and reversed etc at the garage. Various diagnostics and tests presently being carried out but I think it might be another electronics/ sensor issue. Recently my steering airbag sensor squib had to be replaced and the parking sensors are a bit chaotic. Over the past while other electrical bits and pieces having been either failing or playing up.

When I know the final our come I'll let you know.

Sorry to be negative sir... But they normally will drive again when they are cold for about 200-300 meters... Neutral

As ctc's reply, mine was slipping really bad, but after a while waiting for b/down truck it drove on no problem.
At the transmission specialist, they couldn't replicate what I said had happened.
told them to strip it down anyway.
New tc, new clutch pack, new accumulater springs, and new valves, job was a good en, and been brilliant ever since.
£1400 +vat out of pocket, but well worth it. Thumbs Up

UPDATE: I drove the RR to a gear box specialist and they confirmed the worst - gear box needs to be stripped & repaired @ £1,900 plus VAT! On the plus side I was able to drive the RR for about 100 miles before I left it with the garage. They said that gear boxes in my RR tend to go between 90k - 120k. I drove into the garage forecourt as the clock turned 141k. When I pick it up after Easter I'll provide a further update. Whatever happened to the days when hi spec vehicles could be relied upon to do 250k - 300k miles before they'd collapse - especially in an RR! Sad

Happy Easter motoring & thank you for sharing your experiences & thoughts.

But Why did they agree to a gearbox that's rated at 350 Nms max with an engine that produces 390 Nms, it just doesn't compute, especially when you look at the vehicle weight spec's for the box... I believe that the Range Rover is 0.6 tons too heavy... basically it's not fit for purpose.. if I had brought the car from new I reckon I'd be talking to a lawyer by now..

BMW knew that gearbox was flawed and ditched it very quickly.... just after they got shot of Land Rover Whistle

If someone was to come up with a viable solution to the problem, they would make a fortune... We know that you can get a 6 speed ZF to fit the engine, just need some bright spark to sort out the ECU issues and an output shaft that will work with L/R transfer box.

Having read rather a lot about the GM5L40E box this week, from what I can make out the biggest stumbling block is making a loom to run the gearbox.... surely you could ditch the factory loom and run another one along side... it's not like it's pushed for space under there, once you get passed the plastic covers there's enough room to get a football down the side of the engine....... Just needs someone to take the plunge, invest a bit of time and I reckon they'd be quids in Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Apparently the gearbox is actually a General Motors box which is fitted and delivered by BMW under licence? I will find out the the precise detail on that when I collect the RR.

To help cheer up the rest of my Easter break and raise a smile for the forthcoming brighter evenings and summer...what else can I expect to fail now that my RR is 12yrs old with 141k on the clock. I must add that the car is very clean and only had the toe bar fitted when I got it. Until then I think it was a Chelsea tractor Smile
