If you want to know if a good cleanup will be enough or you need to refurb, have a look at the pistons, pump them out a bit with the pedal, not too far or they may come all the way out...

Slide back the rubber seal that sits in the groove, if the pistons look like these then it's time for a new one, if it's damp under the seal it's had it too.... or refurb them yourself for half the cost... (the part of the piston outside the dust seal will always be rusty in our climate)



I'm with Emirates777, I strip them every so often and give them a deep clean.... Mind you he uses remoulds on his company vehicle so what does he know..... :rolllaugh:

Haylands - good one

Point to add to Haylands that I always do

1. Ensure you USE Metal Coat hangers to HANG The Caliper up - when you have unbolted them from hub ( not pull brake lines)

2. I always put a thin piece of OAK in-between Piston and Brake Caliper (4" long) so when you pump the brake pedal in the car the piston will not shoot out. ( ensure the wood is held in Caliper / tape / gaffer tape or get someone to hold it )

3. With caliper suspended on the wire (SAFE through holes) carefully wipe ALL crap away from piston boot and if you SPRAY SILICON (NOT W40 - as this stands for Water Displacement for 40 days ONLY - and YES it only last 40 Days !!!!) - Silicon will last later - you will see any crap gets washed out and it will help lube the position boot and make things like new.

We have a DS3 from new that has 173K on and all brakes are in great condition - due to the face they get over hauled every 6 months - easy job to do if you do them often - NEVER HAD ANY BRAKE PROBLEMS EVER

REMEMBER - when pushing the Piston back in - DO NOT use a screw driver, hammer

use this: - costs around £14 called a BRAKE CALIPER PISTON REWIND TOOL



BUT REMEMBER TO UNDO THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR CAP TOP IN ENGINE BAY - to let the pressure off when your winding in the Piston - this stuff is under pressure when getting compressed.

You will find that if you undo and wind in ( the process 4 or 5 times then a sticky caliper will almost be new again. )

Note: 4.4 / 5 litre BREMBO Units
The above tool is only used on rear or small front calipers
(If you have the Big Front 4.4 / 5 litre Brembo units - you have to leave caliper on hub in suitu - get a mother of all screw drivers and pries the INSIDE side brake pad towards the Piston each side. - in order to slowly push the piston in.

THESE BIG 4.4 / 5 litres calipers you can only do them in suitu. once they are HOMED IN about 4mm the pads LIFT OUT.
Then you can take off and clean the insides up. warning they weigh a tonne !!!!

ah well thats another 600 quid to the Indy apparently the calipers for my car are only available from JLR @ £288 +VAT each so they might as well do the discs and pads whilst they're at it. They did say they could free it all off but reckoned that it might only be a temporary fix - so in for a penny in for 600 quid  Geoff

So 600 quid wasn't quite enough, but as well as the caliper got new discs and pads on the rear, Indy confirmed that the caliper was completely seized and the piston wouldn't move back at all.
I'm not blaming them (they did offer to try and fix but couldn't guarantee either success or permanence). No I'm blaming JLR as they appear to be the only source for the rear calipers on the 5.0l Supercharged and they charge £288 plus VAT per side (as I said above)

I am currently renewing the rear brakes, including calipers, the calipers floated OK, but the piston doesn't retracts enough and have been warming the discs, they were dure to be changed anyway.

I have exercised the pistons with lubrication a couple of times, which helped, but reoccurred.

Service exchange caliper is £55 + at each at Andrew Pages.

Upon stripping the rear set up I found the handbrake setup was in poor condition so I have cleaned and painted the back plates, and carriers, new hand brake shoes, new discs and pads.

Hopefully normal service will return soon Regards
