a knackered alternator will cause all of those things. If the LCM (or any other computer) gets starved of power they'll start malfunctioning and throwing up faults.

If the rectifier in the alternator fails it can drain the battery when the engine is off too.

disconnect the cable from the back of the alternator, then fully charge the battery on a mains charger. Then see if you get the voltage drain with the alternator disconnected.

I had no such warnings but 1 difficult start followed by a no start. That was it - game over for the battery and the alternator.

On reflection Id heard a slight 'belt type' whine in the lower road speeds for the previous 100 or so miles. New alternator and battery and now absolutely brilliant.

It was sorted at my local indi. I understand its a 'front off' job.

AND the saga continues.

Had an LCM delivered, fitted and no lights, indicators.
Only thing it did was allow me to start the car.
Changed it back.
Noo the gearbox is locked in low ratio and won't budge.
Off road Light on.
Disnae flash when moving the switch in any position.
Engine on or off, ignition on or off.
Every warning bing and message one can think of flashes up noo on screen.

So, Santas chariot is off the road noo................. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Any ideas as to how to disengage the high/low so at least I can get to workies?
Tried reversing, forward, swearing, telling the car we still loved it....... More Big Cry

Found how to manual reset and again it's making all the noises but still locked in low Censored Big Cry Made in Scotland frae 'Girders'

Car still stuck in low range and off the road.
I have read that somewhere that someone on here can check the pedomter motor thingy
to determin if faulty before purchase of new one
Any pointers to whom it may be?
I have read that many posts and solutions that my heed hurts.

I am in need of help and alcohol

I'm assuming you haven't changed the alternator yet?

As others have said check the supply for AC signal due to a possible failing alternator.
If the alternator is on it's last legs with failed diodes or regulator it can put out a spiky wave form on the DC (poor earthing may also cause the same).
This in turn will play havoc with CANbus signals such as the LCM uses or voltage drops to other ECU's giving weird messages and failures.

DO NOT go and start changing other components until the alternator is replaced and/or confirmed working correctly otherwise you are just throwing money away. Do not keep running it with a failing alternator unless you want to damage other ECU's and/or the battery too.

I can only repeat what about 4 other people have said before....sort the alternator, your other problems will hopefully clear up when you get a decent DC supply back.

Yes, leave well alone until the alternator is sorted. Once done, do a battery reset and hopefully all your problems will be cured (no guarantees obviously).
Spend the money you would have spent on any other parts on a good Hogmanay! Mr. Green

I started getting similar symptoms (though not as bad) a couple of weeks ago .

It just so happens I was pricing pulleys and tensioners ect. and getting ready to do the whole thing at once Rolling Eyes
Sod's law I guess . Spend 2 weeks looking on eBay and various dealer sites and work out I can get all the parts around have price , when BOOM !!! Get to work and the alternators dead Shocked

At least you have time to get an alternator mail order .
I found the Bosch at half price online the week prior , but as I needed the car for work the next day I ended up paying around $500 for one ....

My battery also dropped a cell due to all the excitement , but that was covered by warranty

Thanx for all the inputs
Its difficult to comprehend why an alternator failing will lock the gearbox.
Anyways, I intend to make a start on the alternator later today
Weil, prep it anyways.
£100 delivered
Thought that was a good price.

The ECUs require the correct voltage without fluctuation and electrical noise, thus a bad alternator can/will cause all sorts of issues to appear. On modern vehicles like this, even so much as a poor quality brake bulb can wreak havoc. If errors in communication occur, things like the transmission may go into failsafe mode to prevent possible damage, as the car can't be sure what's happening to it. Like I said , mine wasn't as bad as yours .
I got gearbox warnings flash up , I think it was "incorrect ratio change" or something like that .
I also got bulb out warnings .
Funnily enough I got two on the way to work that day ... When I started it in the morning it said my front light was out and I checked and it was ok . Then 55 miles later when I arrived at work it said a rear light was out .
When I got out to check I could smell burning Shocked

The alternator was seizing up and the smell was the belt slipping on it .

I will be going back in the new year getting all the pulleys changed .
I should/could have done it while they were in there , but the mail order prices give such a great saving .
