Looking to do a brake system diagnosis/cross check followed by parts order:

2008 RR 4.2 Vogue SC
2009 RR 4.4 HSE

The bigger wheels & brakes on the Vogue feel heavier, almost like a faster tank on the road

After a bit of reading, I see the below makes up the basics of the brake system, correct me if I'm wrong:


Discs (Rotors)
Pads
Sensors
Clips
Fluid
Lines
Hose
In car software check


2008 was recently at the dealer, they had no comment on the brakes, however I feel the pedal is way too soft,
brake response is out of range and takes her a while to come to a stop. Occasionally I find my self opening the window and shouting get out the way! Good news is I'm a responsible driver….Also recent squeaks every now and then.

2009 came out of service not long back and was advised for front and rear pads replacement. Squeaky big girl.
Only picked up the 09 a few months back, the previous owner did advise to replace the brakes.

Aiming to stay as far away possible from the dealer, rely on enthusiasts, specialists on FFRR for support and guidance.

Hope to post up some pics on the aftermath.


Following the subject, if we could please start with the diagnosis first?

Any support for a newbie fellas, whats the best way to diagnose the brake system current condition?

Spongy pedal could be, worn master cylinder, air in system, old brake fluid, perished flexi pipes and probably a few other things...

Squeaky pads could be, worn pads, worn discs or sticking caliper.

Best to get them to a garage and get then sorted... Pete

So im at the garage, sourced original parts from a supplier close by, had them installed, just a replacement job as requested.

Drive the big girl, about 10% braking performance only 😳 ....Garage said give it a few hours, which I did and started to feel the braking performance increase and a day later back to normal but what a risky situation!

1) when replacing front & rear pads n discs can situation of low break performance be avoided?

2) I hear a resonance front left wheel, like a part is grinding with another, sounds like MMMMMMMMM ..
once I hit the brake, noise disappears, so now most of the time my foots on brake pedal standby mode 😎


Went back to the garage, says your brakes are fine, sounds like a wheel bearing?
Could they have messed up during the brake replacements?
Is it a sticky caliper? Maybe a bit of greasing somwhere?

Took it to another friend of mine who runs a garage, shiwed me the front left pad and says small signs of uneven pad wear on the front left which leads to the disc being faulty, skimming can sort it out?
Also said if it was a wheel bearing , would be a constant noise ,so its not the bearing?

On top of it , All brand new original parts..😄

New brakes normally need a period to 'bed in' so you'll usually find they feel weak for the first few miles, then they gradually improve.

Worrying, nah, just diagnosing the issue, forum's much needed experience plays a crucial role here

Turns out to be a a disc skimming on the front left (manufacturing defect), noise gone.

Brand new brakes all set.

it wasn't disk skimming.. and That annoying noise keeps coming back. Really trying to understand what this noise is :confused: ..any ideas…?


2008 Vogue SC, fluid changed and dealer noted the Brake Hose Recall, swapped out.. brake feels more responsive by about 80% , highly recommend everyone to check the brake hose recall. Pads and Discs soon.

Swapping out Pads front and rear, attached; Hella Pagid and sensors.
Daily drive, pad quality should suffice. Anyone tried these pads before?

2009 HSE
That annoying noise still present "MMMMMMM", I could start a choir ... when I hit the brakes it disappears, apparent from the left front wheel... but somehow makes it way back later, advised was a "bearing" that needs to be changed..
Any one experienced this before?

A soft pedal can be due to only fitting new pads as the disc will have a small lip of rust at times only minor but enough for the new pads to ride high on that abd you can get a siight deflection / bending of the pads till they bed in and wear that lip into them.
Best clean it off with a file when fitting new pads on the edge of the disc only hope you understand what i mean.
This also can cause a break squeal as can the paint on the pads, i take the paint off when fitting mine most of the times.
Always use some copper slip on the anti squeal parts of the pads and fixings only.

Mechanic said no need for the anti squeak stuff..No squeaks till now, but did notice a friction noise, hard to explain but starts on high tone and ends on a low as the vehicle slows...mainly just below 50k/ph and reducing..something like this: "MMMmmm..." My guess quality of pads as opposed to the original. I remember reading somewhere that the RR generally likes a quality set of pads? Otherwise braking is great and I drive her easy, so im alright with it for now..Probably best to turn up the nob on the Harmon Kardon and enjoy the ride

Turns out to be a rock that was stuck somewhere below, makes no sense….don't ask……. …all ok now.

Ok so all the noises are gone here, was warn out discs thats all. New discs are in but now faced with what seems to be a temporary matter as per the mechanic? After installing the Front and Rear Discs, took the big girl for a few acceleration runs/braking, 0-50, 0-70 , 0-100 , the third attempt I noticed the brakes were cooking, steaming if I may…Took her back, they checked the pads and discs, removed the wheel etc….I asked if it was probably because they didn't clean the discs before putting it on? I understand new discs come with a coating of some sort? It was the first time I noticed discs were not cleaned and they said its not required? Was told not to worry and will be just fine..thoughts gents?
