Bit of a groan (4.4 TDV8)?

Just noticed a slight (hard to describe) groan/whoo/ secondary lightly tinny metallic sounding noise when the car accelerates normally from a standstill, more so if going up an incline perhaps. The faintest of noise but something that has come on recently.

Ive recently changed the front Diff Oil and also had both front wheels off to clean them.

Any ideas welcomed please?

Thanks.

Thumbs Up

Hi pld118

just read the above -

any chance you can grab a sound file from your Iphone from inside the FFRR and put a quick upload on YouTube and post a link here so we can all hear it - it will help us identify what this might be.

Just out of Interest - both our FF have got K&N air filters fitted ( 4.4 TDV8 lumps ) you can clearly hear the Whoosh and V8 growl when the car accelerates - have you just replaced the air filters lately ?

another point - have you checked all your Wheel nuts are tight ( 140Nm ) - worth a check Thumbs Up

Thanks for replies.

No recent filter changes, nuts tight and I'd read that whine thread but felt it took me no further.

Not sure if a sound recording would pick up as so low a noise but will try Thumbs Up

Could it be something come a adrift somewhere Ryan? Mine makes a few odd noises on occasion. None of which have gotten worse or better. And are intermittent.

What sort of area is your noise from?
Heavy or light acceleration?
Every time or occasionally?

I'm wondering if my noises are the same ones. Not sure though, I get like a little warble as it changes up from 2 - 3 and I back off, like a triple tone type noise three warbley quick hoots. Personally think it may be a boost valve releasing some pressure, it's been there since I've had it. And I can't make it do it! Just does it when it feels like it There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mark,

1. Could it be something come a adrift somewhere ('hoot')?

Possibly, you mention 'hoot', I've described a whoo type noise.

2. What sort of area is your noise from?

Front driver's side quarter in the area around the front wheel/ in front of the pedals/ around the engine bay.

3. Heavy or light acceleration?

Light

4. Every time or occasionally?

Every time I've driven it in the last few weeks but I've only been driving it a couple of times a week and briefly at that. Someone else drives it every day but hasn't noticed anything. I suspect the radio inevitably drowns things out Rolling Eyes

Could it be gearbox related???

Ryan

from what I am reading and hearing it sounds like you have a

nut lose on the Front Disc Stone protector plate behind the disc - this will make a alloy reverberating sound
they are made of very light tinny metal plate that if you flick it will make a twang sound ?

Check the nuts are secure or is anything out of alignment where the discs runs.

Out of interest:
Is the Disc mounted flush on the carrier plate ( have you taken the disc / wheel off lately ) ? - Brake pads seated in correctly ?

Actually, Emirates, the protector was a thought for the reasons you mention and describe.

I've had the wheel off to clean it a few weeks ago too. Will check all thoroughly over the coming days and report back.

Incidentally, drove it this morning from cold and was tootling around locally and not a peep!

Thumbs Up

Have something similar, almost like someone's stuck one of those whale sounds CDs on. Doesn't happen very often.

yep thats the puppy, front drivers side wheel well whale noise.

sounds like a common noise then.

I will check the brake backplate on mine too to see if its loose, as it seems to mostly happen when turning too as far as i can tell. Rolling Eyes There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The sound of a whale describes what i have been getting since i purchased my 3.6 last July.

Happens under load @ around 2k rpm.

No noise when at stand still.

It does annoy me but sounds like quite a few cars have this.

Cheers

Thumbs Up
