Winter tyre search

I'm currently looking for some winter tyres for Range Rover and I've found some Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme which are priced at £600 for 4 tyres delivered from Camskill. I had these tyres on my last L322 and was quite happy with them.

Does anyone know of any cheaper/better deals to be had?

The size i'm looking for are 255/50 R20

Hi Stan,
There are a number of posts and video evidence that shows that a 4x4 on standard tyres is less able than 2 whelel drive car with winter tyres. Posts from our friends over on the continent appear to support this

If you're happy with adequate then fair enough Whistle

I'd rather have the best available Razz

It's not just about snow - winter tyres work better in general cold conditions - so they will also noticeably reduce your stopping distance on a dry or wet road.

£600 seems like a very good price

I have to agree with the comments about general performance in the winter months . . . Winter tyres just grip better, esp in the wet.

Whilst previously I had no issue using summer tyres through the winter including snow driving, after fitting winters I found a big difference to grip. on a particular roundabout in the wet where I could feel the front wheel scrubbing its grip slightly on the summers, after the change to winters, that scrubbing disappeared when driving in wet. The front just turned into corners better and all round held more grip.

In the west of Scotland where I stay, it rains a lot, and it's more the wet performance I want than ice/snow. I'm still trying to figure whether all seasons would be better than outright winters for me. V8 or else ...

Having been persuaded a few years ago that it was better and as you are only scrubbing out summer or winter tyres at any time it is also cost neutral, 2 years ago I got a set of these and was blown away by the difference in grip when it is cold. Cold dry tarmac, cold wet tarmac and snow of any variety is just so much better.
Having a 405 imminent my only dilemma is whether to use the 322 wheels and winters I have or cash them in and invest in a set of 405s.
Having them in modern slang is a no brainer. letters not necessarily in the right order

I sold my L322 wheels and tyres and bought different ones for the L405

Otherwise you will need to inform your insurance company that you're running non standard wheels and non standard size tyres - and they will look Censored Whistle

Exclamation Beware buying from Camskill as their tyres can have damage which they will not honour replacement for. Even when the tyre manufacturer's report indicates they were the source of the damage you will not receive a refund! Sad

Can`t find cheaper deals but if you want better deals then fit Michelin Alpin or Pirelli Winter or Good Year Ultragrip or Continental TS 850 .
All the above have better wet weather grip than Vredestein and I can vouch for them as I have every one of the named tyres fitted to the family fleet except the conti but had old type previously and reviews rate the new 850 very well .

Vreds are ok but the rest are so much better . The difference in braking distance between an E rating and C rating is more than a couple of car lengths , however , those tests do not always give the full picture of a tyre .
The Good Years are superior on snow /mud /ice .
Pirelli work fantastic all year round even in hot weather .
Michelins near as good as pirelli in summer but will last longer . I have the Alpin PA4 which is the newer development over the A2 . The A2 is listed in your size and will serve you well .

The prices on those links go up and down frequently so watch out .

You may need to reset some of the search criteria to winter tyres on some of those links .
Reading the reviews is helpful except for the odd crazy driver who can`t get to grips ( scuse the pun ) with winter tyres .http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/

Shocked
C`mon now , really . 1 review rates it poor .
http://www.tyretest.com/4x4-tyre-reviews/g...index.html

If you search around that link you will find info on all sorts of tyres but I can tell you you are taking your life in your hands with anything other than the best branded tyres .
Some of the scandinavian tyres may seem good as winter tyres but they are not so good for the wet British weather .
Listen to me , I have done my research and tried a few over the years .
If you can find an Avon tyre to fit you will do well with those . Some may be branded Cooper .

Sounds like good advice from Andra Thumbs Up

If you're going to run cheap winter tyres, then you may as well stick with the summer ones Whistle

Exactly my point Stan - I agree with your earlier post - a FFRR in most parts of the UK is fine on regular tyres.

If you want the best possible grip levels, then buy a decent set of winter tyres.

I'm just not convinced that a cheap set of winter tyres makes any sense
