Winter this year is tipped to be an extra cold affair and i just wanted to remind members (whilst the last of the sunny weekends are here) to look at winterising their FFRR’s...
Coolant should be changed regularly, I do mine every 24 months as it degrades much quicker these days (biodegradable) and with temperatures set to beat those of 2009 some -16 degrees You have been warned...

Don’t forget those other cars too Wifey’s car, kids cars etc etc

Winter tip No. 2

Check your key blade unlocks the drivers door lock

Make sure you apply silicone spray to the door seals after every wash in the winter, especially the felt top door seal that is easily ripped away if it sticks to the door. 

Gummi for the door rubbers and Lithium grease in the door lock

Also dont forget a decent screenwash mix as while some parts of the screen system are heated it can still take a while to de-ice them.... Also a good chance to test fire the FBH if fitted and ensure its firing up as the park heat is a very nice feature indeed that not many other vehicles have

And if you use the hidden menu and your battery voltage is showing lower than it should its best to look at getting a new one at the ready for when it fails in the cold weather...


Also worth noting is having a survival bag in the boot, i hang mine off the netting hook on the passenger side! Things like a lucazade, some snacks, a blanket, gloves, hat, water bottle and backup battery charger for your mobile are worth sticking in and maybe a landy magazine to stave off boredom should you get stuck and be waiting for a yellow taxi  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Time to take off the cover strips on the rear wheel arches, clean up the return flanges and strips, regrease the metalwork and refit the strips for another year of corrosion free wheel arches.

..and for those with tractors diesels , get the battery checked out cos any cold will cause you problems if the battery is under par.. ... - .- -.

I was going to suggest a tow rope, but I'm not sure you can use them now..... Think it has to be a solid bar. Rope would get someone out of trouble though..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Check tyre tread depth, especially on the front wheels.
Just because its the best 4x4 by far, you can still come unstuck (quite literally).
One winter, I wanted to turn left into a side street (frozen slush / compacted snow), turned the wheel and went straight on, just missing a Suzuki jeep that started to pull out, we both stared at each other with open mouths .

Erm, no. Those of us with the sense to have petrols will also apply the same common sense when selecting an attended service station.

Is there we should be starting an annual debate on the merits of; a) winter tyres, b) which brand c) who has some wheels for sale?

Winter tyres are well worth it IMHO, especially when we get below freezing for any length of time.

Winter screen wash, just use normal dilute-able screen wash and mix it 50/50 with water, don't need that stupidly over priced green stuff. Plus it is a good idea to run a lot through the system paying special attention to the headlamp washers and rear wash wiper,as these are often left with summer mix in them and they freeze solid all winter

Got caught out when that Arctic blast happened a few years back, you know when it all snowed up at the end of October and stayed until March, the headlamp washers on the company Landcruiser froze solid and never worked again, ever

I can't remember how big the washer bottle is on the ffrr, but I think it's around 4 ltrs in size, so if you were to tip 2 ltrs of concentrate in the system before adding water you wont be far wrong, then it's just a case of flushing it through the system. You can normally tell when it starts to come through as it all gets rather frothy, man
I suppose that the best way to deal with the headlamps is turn them on wash them and then turn them off and on again, otherwise you've got to do 5 cycles before it squirts again

Is there an alternative to LR antifreeze. I have some OAT in the garage but not sure if it's suitable.

I did check the condition of mine today with a tester and it read that it was good for -37 but not sure how long it's been in there. Regards
