Is a 2004 Vogue with these faults worth buying?

Just had an AA check on a 2004 Vogue I like the look of and these came up. I know a car of this age will have issues so I'm not overly surprised. The seller to be fair has offered to rectify but are any of these not the norm considering age or symptoms of more long term issues?

Essential Repairs:

It is strongly advised that the essential repairs are investigated and rectified prior to purchase.

Discs/pads (if visible) - Offside front brake disc has a deep score mark, this unit will require replacement.

Engine underside leakage - Oil leaks - External leaks (upper engine) - There appears to be apparent oil leaks from the upper areas of engine located around the rocker cover on the offside of vehicle, the leaks at this stage do not appear severe engineer recommends the engine area be cleaned and investigated then rectified if this is found to be the case.

There appears also to be an apparent oil leak from the front and rear areas of engine. Due to engine under tray engineer can not verify exact area. Engineer recommends the engine be cleaned and investigated then rectified.

Water pump - Coolant leaks - Engine coolant leaks - There is an apparent coolant leak from the upper area of engine around the water pump this is a fresh leak engineer recommends the engine be cleaned and investigated then rectified. Please note this fault has prevented a road test.
Oil filter housing is not properly secured, this will require attention.

Gaiters - Offside front outer driveshaft gaiter is leaking grease, this will require rectification.

Headlights - Nearside front headlight is not seated correctly in its position and will require refittment.

Advisable Repairs:
These should be planned and budgeted for.

Offside front door - Offside front door mirror has signs of corrosion, this unit may require replacement, failure to attend to them could lead to deterioration of the area.

Wheel Trims - Both rear central wheel caps are missing, this will require replacement.

Engine oil level - Engine oil level is low, this will require rectification and may be related to the above mentioned oil leak.

Rear bumper - Offside rear area of bumper appears to be secured with a piece of white wire, this will require attention.

Headlamp wash/wipe - Front headlight wash wipes may require attention these did not appear to operate.

Fan blade secure nut is visibly damaged with chisel marks, this unit may require replacement.

Non standard air filter is fitted to this vehicle for performance reasons customer must satisfy himself in that respect.

Bumpers / No plates - Ft/Rr - The front and rear number plates on this vehicle have been secured with double sided tape, engineer recommends these be secured with the correct screws.

Im guessing this is 4.4 petrol

I don't think this is a bad list tbh

1) oil leaks are probably rocker covers gaskets, not a bad job. Please replace the PCV pipes as this is probably the cause as these hose can degrade causing pressure in the rocker area, hence the leak
2) CV boot, no brainer just needs fixed
3) Waterpump, again a very common failure point on the BMW 4.4 M62, use OEM if you can, well written up in the wiki. budget for replacing all of the coolant pipes while you have the system drained
4) rust on door - buy a door if you can

So if the enginee doesn't sound bad go for it,
valve guides and vanos are the expensive failures that cause a noticeable expensive clatters from the engine

No bolts on the number plate... Laughing

I meant chain guides not valve guides

Nothing really in there that would overly bother me - guess it is the 4.4 v8

Oil Leak Offside - the filler cap is on the offside and I had similar problem - engine cleaned up and no leak so appears to have been drops from filling oil.

You did not mention price and mileage - most things can be fixed and the 4.4 is a well documented engine for faults and cures.

There are many FFRR around so take your time looking - also check out the for sale section of forum where enthusiast well cared for vehicles appear from time to time

Your Headlamp wash wipers need to operate if not just Halogen bulbs (MOT / legal requirement due to light dispersal from rain on lense). Howard

I had a 2004 4.4. It had coolant leakage from the back of the engine, though was running fine. I was advised that this was bad news. The coolant leak might be cured by new head/gasket work, but there was no guarantee that would be a permanent solution. The alternatives were a new engine or a new car. The head work was expensive enough, and a new engine was not worth it, so I bought a new car.
I suppose your decision will be based on price and how much it would cost you to fix the car, plus whether you are able to do continuing maintenance work. Even before mine got to that stage, it had become rather a money pit, with regular problems and expense. I'd look elsewhere. Only Range Rovers since 1988

If in doubt (as CS says) look elsewhere

Just FYI Coolant leak from rear of engine is often the "stubby" hose adapter from rear manifold to heater pipes - about £10 part no. JHC000081

I carry one in the boot and like everyone who has ever owned a LR product, I have a "TO DO" list which gets longer and this job is on it ( hoping I can get to it before it fails no doubt on a rainy Sunday night on hard shoulder of the M6)

IMO sounds poorly maintained, wire holding bumper on, Inop headlamp washers, low oil, loose oil housing, etc etc.
Plenty out there that'll be better.

+1 on that!

We rushed and bought a 2003 4.4 about 4 years ago, looked great! Without going into a long story, we discovered that it has not been serviced for about 2 years, it had an oil leak from the back of the gearbox which the seller (non LR Dealer) had 'fixed', which later cost us £3500 for a full gearbox rebuild!

Since we bought it for £11500 we have spent around £18,000 in service costs and repairs!!

My advice, dont rush into it! And if the bumper is held on by wire, what else is it hiding underneath? Walk away!!

Edit! Just read this ' Please note this fault has prevented a road test.'

Dont walk away, RUN!!!!

The headlight washers operate every 5 times you wash the screen with the lights on, so worth double checking that issue a few more times with the headlights on.

There are plenty about, so I'd look at a few others to gauge if they are better or worse for the money. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I'd agree, but as to the thread title "is a 2004 Vogue with these faults worth buying?" The answer is yes, if it's the right price! I mean it's probably worth a couple of grand in parts if you broke it up.

In practical terms i suppose it's going to depend on your ability to fix the items, if it was cheap enough i'd buy it and fix the items myself. But if you don't have time and have to pay a garage to do it all, then it's probably easier to find a better one, there are lots out there.

You have to be realistic on an 11 yr old car and this has not been dressed up. Any tin pot dealer can solve most of those issues with steam cleaning, and a few nuts bolts and wheel centre caps. And headlight adjustment/wiper check. And maybe a better bumper repair. I think the AA man has covered himself well. there is a buyers guide on here in the Wiki, and that is very detailed. you should be looking into how many regular services it has had, and owners etc. and what items have had any historic problems. These v8 engines do leak, and that's often because of hardened rocker cover gaskets, and the valley pan seal on the water circuit. Or as stated, the water pump. (It sounds like the fan has been knocked about instead of being spannered off)
You are typically buying an unwarranted cheaper Range Rover, and you have a few minor faults there. You should be asking an owner driver to look it over (as you are here), but in person. These cars do drive really well, and first time drive will seem lovely. Brakes will wear out, as will tyres. Most land rovers leak a little oil. Old gaiters split. At least you don't need a set fo tyres to carry on driving it..
At a dealers, you will be looking possibly, at the sort of same car, with at least a £1000 markup, and a shiny engine, and fresh mot, and a sort of general warranty. (With small print) same oil leak to show itself later, His own tick sheet checklist for you to read, and plenty of promises.
If you can live with some oil marks on your drive, as you familiarise yourself, and budget on a little bit of local garage rectification work, in the coming months, those faults are just what they are, -minor.
It's as previously mentioned. -does the engine sound near silent at idle, and the gearbox have any history?
Remember, most 11yr old cars are being traded in, you can get a car for a good price if you take a few minor niggles. Cash talks, knock him down!
You are looking at a car wearing no make up, and an expert opinion, covering his @rse

£7.50 when i had to buy that part a couple of years ago for my 2002 model. Apparently they have a life of around 10 years, so i got an extra three years as a bonus. Mr. Green

its very difficult to guess-timate cost of repairs, but it sounds like you could just drive it around and get to know your car, whilst keeping an eye on on mentioned faults, rather than throwing your wallet straight at it. apart from the water leak. consider that the priority. look at the mot advisory sheet, what did he point out etc? brakes? dangerous bumper fix?
when you go to the seller, they will invariably say, thats the price with the faults mentioned.
you have to be a bit realistic, and a bit cheeky too. I cant give garage type repair prices, you can ring round to get those, but a set of brakes, and a water leak mend, is probably what you are thinking of. the rocker cover gaskets, are not that hard to do, say 1-2 hrs, and £40 for the bits, but you might want to drop in new plugs at that moment, (£60?) as you are only 1 step from doing this with the rocker gaskets. -and the plug wells often fill up with oil when the covers leak, so its always recommended anyway. To me, the main issue is water leak. Get that sorted, its not gaurunteed to be the water pump ONLY, but they are troublesome, and not that hard to do. if your bumper is drilled and temp repaired, you can find a same coloured bumper if you wait a bit, secondhand on ebay, and couriered to you, maybe for £100 all in. search ebay. or have it minor repaired by 'in your garden dent repair doctor'.
if the car is super smart looking then it's just a case of remdying the minor faults all cars come with (to your taste)
If your tongue is wet and 'hanging out' for the car, the seller is going to guess. try him at a silly price, maybe a grand off. you never know. after all, you paid for the report. and dont tell him ALL the faults, or hand it to him, tell him these are the ones that you are MOST wary of. .

It's a lovely car... but it's an 'old' car. everyday cars of this year, are very cheap. this is at the top of the pile...
bits and bobs for this engine are not mega expensive, =it's essentially a BMW 7 series engine. of that era, nearly all parts are transferable/same etc..
