Selling a car - thoughts please

Had someone come up barely look at the car, and then make me an offer not far off the asking price.... not sure why but I feel fairly uneasy about selling to the person, any thoughts? Is this just part and parcel of selling a Range of this age? Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White
Gone: Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue, Zambezi Silver, Charcoal Oxford Leather
Also: Mk1 Audi TT 1.8T Quattro, Brilliant Black

Just think he may have looked at a fair few before yours. As we all know its easy to buy a Range Rover but not that easy to find a good one, especially around the 8k mark. He probably soon realised he's dropped on to a good one.

Do him a favor and take his money, he won't find a better one for the money!

I have no personal experience of this, but believe there are scams around where the price is paid other than in actual cash, eg some way of clawing it back out of PayPal once the "buyer" has the car, or getting the seller's bank account details and using those dishonestly or reversing a transfer in some way once the car has been handed over. You could try Googling for details if you are not getting cash. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Andy, I always sell cars privately. Never traded one in.

Once, when selling a nice car, the person making the offer did similar to what you describe. It was a fair chunk of money and his demeanour was a tad menacing. There was just something about him not sitting quite right. I declined to sell him the car and he was not impressed.

Eventually, after a few weeks and having lowered the asking price about £2k, I got that full lowered asking price. I was happy to take that from the obviously genuine chap buying it.

As mentioned, maybe your man has seen a few and knew yours was 'the one' straight away (from a good home etc).

Go with your instinct. You won't be far off the mark Thumbs Up

I would be less concerned about who has it more that their money is good!

Cash is king, bankers drafts are out, paypal is out. they could do a bank transfer, but I would prefer cash, take them to the bank with it and pay it in, after that give them the key! That way you are sure the cash is genuine, and after that its the banks problem.......is it not. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mmmmmmmm Trust your gut instinct, if you are uneasy just ask him for some photo ID and a utility bill as proof of ID, check the cash very carefully and get a friend around to count the cash in front of the guy, I have found in the past that is isn't easy to count money and do small talk.

If someone is comfortable with the offer, then fine. If someone is not, then the answer is simple! Rolling Eyes

I get that people can make a snap decision... but he didn't look in the boot, didn't check under the bonnet, didn't open a back door, didn't test anything electrical and said he would collect it tomorrow, I'm not in a position for it to be collected ASAP as I have a personalised registration on it which needs to come off Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White

Cash is all well and good if it's all genuine. You also run the risk of someone coming back and robbing you for it.

If you're going to the bank with them and dealing with cash, then you may just as well have a transfer done at the counter, the bank staff will verify there is money in their account and if it doesn't arrive then it's the banks problem. It can't be recalled once sent.

A lot of people are put of with turning up at someone's house with a bundle of cash, there are cases of people doing just that, only it's not the sellers real address, but the 'seller' knows you're going to be arriving at that address at a given time with a load of cash....

I assume the car you're selling is a good one, the buyer may well just have seen that from the outset. On the other hand they may not even know what they're doing, but that's not your problem.

Doing the deal at the bank is great. No one if left holding a bag of cash that can easily be stolen.
However, gut instincts are good, so waiting for the next customer isn't the end of the world.

When I bought mine a few weeks back, I paid by bank transfer. Due to the fact it was a large'ish sum of money I had to ring my bank to authorise it. Seller then just waited for it to appear in his bank account and all good.

+1 on you and the buyer going to the bank with the cash. Thats how i sold mine and thats how i will do it from now on, so much easier than sitting trying to count cash and worrying if its real or not or doing digital transfer and have to wait a few days for it to show in your account.

The guy that bought mine didn't seem that bothered about checking the car out either but i think as said above he had saw a few poor examples and could clearly see that mine was a genuine car. Also i have went with friends and family to view cars to help them out when buying and people that are not used to the process actually think its rude to thoroughly check out the car ! You are probably thinking its too good to be true due to the previous hassle you have had trying to sell but thats just sometimes the way people are, they don't really know what to ask and just go by exterior looks and trust that its a good car.

As for your private plate you can send a separate form (V317) off with the v5 following the sale and they do it all at the one time. So if he is keen you don't want to give him time to change his mind or find another. Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

Bought my Range pretty much unseen!

Saw it online, cheap as chips so told him I'll be there in the morning. This was in south wales, I'm in Inverness.

Arrived 5am, slept in the car for 3 hours, had a very quick look and gave him the money.

Drove to south wales for a defender I won on ebay, didn't even test drive it, he just loaded onto trailer and away I went.
Bought a cherry turbo in London, couldn't test drive due to the car being uninsured. Sounded fine so drove it home. Admittedly this was risky as it had 2 days Mot left and its from the 80s! Passed the mot with no problem after a new set of tyres.
Not every purchase requires a full dissection of the car to check it out.

If you lack mechanical knowledge its just a shiny car that looks good so he offered money, whats wrong with that?
