Advice about Westfalia tow bar

Hi

I will be picking up my (new to me) L322 later this week-- 53 plate

There is a query though- it has part of the Westfalia tow bar fitted but not all of it- is this normal??

It looks like the main mounting brackets are fitted but not the bar that would mount the tow ball

What have I got? And how do I complete the installation?

Any ideas

Thanks in advance

Reecy

Pictures would help but it sounds like you have just got the armature with a 2" square hole in it to take tow bar itself. Geoff

Then you will need either one of the below to complete...

You get the armature as a separate part.

You then have a choice of a drop plate towbar, a quick release swan neck towbar or a cycle carrier.

They're done like that so you can have a choice between the cheaper and more agricultural drop plate or the more expensive quick release. It's also so you can remove them for off roading. The original Range Rover and Discovery tow bars acted like a plough in deep mud and weren't easily removable.

Have a look in the boot, on the right hand side there is a lift up panel, you might well find you have a removable swan neck neatly stored in there ready for use. Smile

If how ever you find you do need to buy the drop plate or swan neck kit, you can buy them from somewhere like www.pfjones.co.uk, don't get them from Land-Rover, as they're silly money, as youve established they're just supplied by Westfalia!

You say you do not have the bar that goes across. From that I think you have the factory setup which is a plate on either side to support the exhaust and provide the recovery ring out at the offside rear.

Although they have Westfalia labels on them they are not the tow bar armature. To fit a towbar they are removed nd replaced by the Westfalia armature which, as said above, gives the option of different hitches. ie. You need complete towbar setup.

There is alink in Wiki which, if you follow it through gets you to the fitting instruction which will clarify it for you.

Sorry not providing the link as I am doing this on iPad which is a PITA to copy and paste on. John

The above link is carrying the ',' in the URL so the link is not working:

Direct link to the FFRR bars:

Found the link to the fitting instructions: http://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/co...oupId=1671

If you look at pictures 20 and 21, they show the parts to be removed and replaced by the armature.

I believe that is what you have, from your description. John

Don't waste your money on Westfalia, they rip everyone off just like LR playing on the OEM tie..

You could do worse than look at this:

http://a1-tow.com/Files/Fitting/LR732DS_B.pdf

Perfectly reasonable alternative with the same nose weight and towing capacity etc designed for the FF.

I'm having one fitted on 15th with dedicated twin electrics for £391.00. bit better than the cheapest westfalia quote of £690.00 or a local indy at £1002.00 or LR main stealer at £1200!!!!! 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

But if he already has the towing armature fitted it would be cheaper to just buy the drop plate for it (£95)

Would seem crazy to remove the armature and pay for a new one to be fitted, your comment seems a bit irrelevant to the original post to be honest.

I still suspect the swan neck is probably hidden in it's compartment in the boot.

I got my Westfalia setup from PF Jones in Manchester for just over £300 including electrics and "agricultural" drop plate, electrics cost more for pre-2010 MY. I fitted it myself, easy enough but it is heavy. Geoff

Only trying to help Zircon. From my reading above Reecy may not even have the armature. I'm sure Reecy will be doing his own research in addition to this forum.

Not sure " seems a bit irrelevant to the original post to be honest" was justified - none taken!! 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

PF Jones or second hand (fleabay) are the cheapest options, I'd stick with Westfalia as cthem are OEM and will fit with no messing around. Use of a trolly jack to hold it in place when doing the bolts up, is a big help, as it is Censored heavy. The look on the delivery drivers face will say it all Laughing

Oh and one last thing, the drop hitch doesn't look much, be warned it's Shocked heavy Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

^ the Westfalia armature boxed up with all the packaging weighs 36.5Kg. Added to the vehicle it adds 26 Kg. Bought mine from PF Jones. Will fit it when I have summoned up the energy. Very Happy. Delivery was free to UK. John
