Which does 'sense of occasion' best... L322 or 405!

Unless getting into true "classic car territory", I can't understand why the old / obsolete model of any car would be better or give a greater sense of occasion than the new version.

I'm not prepared to spend circa £70k plus on one car, so I accept the happy compromise (much to the annoyance of my kids and their "street cred") of driving "the old model" Thumbs Up

As far as an "ageing Bentley" is concerned, if you think a RR can be eye watering when they go wrong (let alone some routine jobs), don't even think about a Bentley - you can pick up a £5 - £10k bill without trying very hard at all Whistle

Yes, the L405 carries much more prestige IMO.

RE: the Bentley choice, our new one has been a bit of a terror with reliability and has been very expensive to cure under warranty. The part costs are high (£2k for a windscreen alone). I would never own one out of warranty. It is in a different league to the FFRR in terms of costs to run and costs to maintain.

Swapping a starter motor is apparently an engine-out job on a first-generation GT/Flying Spur ...

Switched from my beloved L322 Vogue SE 3.0L diesel last week to L405 Vogue SDV8 4.4. diesel and must admit , I am very pleased with the 405. it has more of some things and less of others, but the MPG already is 5 MPG better than my old one and I've only done 300 miles so far. The engine is fantastic and the lack of roll in corners noticeable better than the L322 Seats are not as adjustable as my old one but more comfortable however. It does have the 22inch wheels which look great, but of course you do lose out on ride slightly with them being 40 profile tyres as opposed to the 60s I had on the L322. Must admit, I was also of the opinion mentioned earlier on this thread that the L322 will unfortunately become dated in a few years and pick up the 'old' name, but like the P38 did when the 322 came out so people started calling it the 'classic'. No regrets owning the L322 though, gave me over 7yrs of enjoyment and loved every time I stepped into it, I'm pretty sure the 405 will be the same Steve

Cheers - I have always preferred black cars but was considering cirrus grey and loire blue ones and this cirrus grey with the highlighted 'vents' and 22inch wheels really caught my eye and must say I really liked the look of it! Thanks to the guy who specified it 16months ago Smile Steve

Three, or actually four things I miss in the L322 (2008):

Powered tailgate.
Powered retractable tow ball.
Bluetooth streaming audio. (Does MY2010-2012 has this?)
Active cornering enhancement.

So will I wait for a L405 or go for another late L322? Or even a late D4 is on the cards. New Discovery (5) or new Defender is too far off, it will take at least 7 years until I want to spend the money they will fetch.

The boot size of L405 annoys me, cars should get bigger, not smaller! Twisted Evil Supporter and maintainer of EDF - Mrs Edfors' shopping cart.

I regret buying an L405 SDV8 Vogue SE every time I drive it because:-

1. It floats around, lifting the front up and down and rocking me from side to side all the time, the adaptive dynamics is clearly not suitable for the size and weight, its unsettling to be in a car that floats like this.
2. It still feels very big and heavy unless on the motorway
3. The turbo lag / lack or response is incredible, waste of time having 700Nm of torque because once its finally moving I have to slow down because the ride feels uncontrolled
4. The keyless entry is crap, the door buttons have to be pressed hard on some doors to activate the locking
5. The soft close doors are crap too, they dont soft close quite a bit, they seem to have to be closed a certain way to activate it
6. It lacks driver adjustment for suspension damping on-road unlike other brands, it should have firmer setting options like the Sport because it has been marketed as having adaptive dynamics and has a spec option for an active rear diff, what the f**k for?
7. The only way of getting the gearbox to wake up a bit is to use the paddles, even S mode is lazy.
8. Its not worth £40k more than a 2010 Supercharged L322, end of story

I do like how well the windows close, how quiet the tailgate is when closing, how large the seats are, the quality / softness of the leather, the rear seating area is excellent and the driving position is always great in a FFRR but these are not enough to justify the purchase, its not good enough in the important areas for me personally.

I admit is looks fabulous, its the reason I went for an L405 over the Sport but it drives like sh*t, I have owned many RR's and also many other 4X4 / SUV's and the German stuff is far better to drive, has adjustable damper and gearbox settings to accommodate driving styles / road surfaces etc. whereas the L405 is just "as it comes" because the sport setting on the gearbox isn't different enough to make it feel better (or I'm used to the minor difference because I only use that setting) and the adaptive dynamics is simply rubbish, my L405 has damping just like my 2010 S/C and feels out of control when pressing on even a little bit on country lanes, just like the L322.

Its been to LR and they dont think anything is wrong with the damping so it cant be changed to improve it, this is just how an L405 rides in my opinion, and I want out in truth because I hate driving it.

Just my thoughts, I'm sure others will strongly disagree.

Carl

I disagree on the handling, it is way better than my previous L322 Supercharged, it is still no Cayenne but a superb compromise between good handling and comfort. It is no sportscar and is not meant to be driven as such!

Shocked Wow - I think my L405 is better in every way - there's nothing about it I would swap back

I agree that it's still a big car etc but don't think there is anything that is worse than the L322 - sounds like the issues are more to do with going from a 5L petrol to a 4.4L diesel.

That's a fair comment, but driving normally down a country lane or other slightly uneven road means I get rocked from side to side and can actually see my bonnet bouncing up and down, the same sensation as the L322 would give. It may be reduced but the L405 still pitches and rolls on anything but the smoothest of roads.

If it were different I would be delighted but as it stands, I feel its that poor I am going to trade mine after 3 months and will loose £15k.

Throw in the hilarious LR customer service and it makes me confident that the L405 is simply out of its depth in the £100k price category.

Expecting it to drive like a Cayenne Turbo or an X5M is missing the point.

Carlos, it sounds like something is very wrong with your car.
