So I've only had my Range Rover since November 2014, had both rocker cover gaskets replaced in March this year due to an oil leak but I am still getting spots on my drive 3-4 weeks after the rocker cover gaskets were replaced by an independent specialist.

So assuming it's not the rocker cover gaskets, what other things could it be? How many of you have drips from their vehicles and is it expected for a 104,500 mileage vehicle?

I have booked mine in to have the air con serviced and re-gased in a few weeks time and have asked to check for oil leaks again but I'm wondering whether I'm just going to keep going round in circles.

I lay underneath the front of the vehicle and took this photo straight up. It seems to be coming from the engine area above somewhere and running down unless this is old/excess oil from before the rocker cover gaskets were replaced ????

I have same engine. I have small leaks from front of engine. The only real way to find them, is to get your hand down there and feel for them. When you find it, wipe hand and follow it upwards. The front upper timing covers leak as do the sump gasket area. It's because of the type of oil in cars these days. Synthetic oil tends not to turn to grease, and seal itself. The ageing rubber gaskets harden and let by a little. It can be a big job to replace these gasket/seals. Suggest while you are finding leaks, to park over a piece of plywood on drive to preserve your drive.
Wiping off oil with some wd40 and cleaning around and rechecking etc. sometimes you could just need a couple of nuts tightening up, but be careful. Looking at your sump, there are two sump gaskets, lower and main. sump tray lower, and sump to block main. With a good bright torch/lamp you might be able to find its source. It's sometimes possible to seal a leak with some RTV sealant. Like shower type sealant. But for cars. Cleaned up with some solvent and applied.

This being our fifth Range Rover, from a 3.5 manual carb V8 to the 4.4V8, I was always told that if a Range Rover did not leak oil then there was something seriously wrong with it!

I always assumed it was part of the build quality!

I have the oil leaks too on my 4.4 V8 I did the vanos seloniod gaskets yesterday as they were leaking bad & thought great, I've sorted the oil leak............but NO! I guess I must have just fixed one 😳

It could be coming from my rocker cover gasket but I think it's coming from the timing chain cover. I was out today with a rag wiping & checking. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

I prefer to think along the lines of 'it's not an oil leak, it's just a Range Rover marking its territory'.

Early BMW era petrol L322's tend to leak whereas Diesels don't tend to so much sir...

Ok - so process of elimination I guess. I've had both rocker cover gaskets replaced so I am hoping I can rule that out now. Possible sump gasket(s) then or other? I know it's had new breather pipes a year or so ago.

There seems to be a trend with the exception of a few that leaks are quite common

Can I just confirm also, the picture I took is of the sump then? I have no idea, I'm amazed how it moves weighing in at almost 3 tonnes never mind how it works. I have little car/engine knowledge

I've had leaks from my rocker covers, trans oil cooler and PCV hoses when they started to break down - sprayed fine mists of oil under the plastic cover which ran down the back of the engine bizarrely ended up looking like a leak near the front of the engine. Current Fleet:-

If its the M62 BMW V8 it will be the rocker gaskets. The other half replaced mine and all seemed fine for a month or so then they started to leak again. You will find they leak from the half moons normally on the back of the engine where the camshafts are. He has done it again now and all seems fine for the minute......

Where the oil is leaking if you get under the car (WHEN COLD) look up from underneath at the back of the engine where the exhaust joins the manifold and shine a torch at the back of the block I almost put money on the fact you will see oil dripping from the gasket on either side which drips onto the manifold runs down the block and drips off the sump and onto the anti roll bar. You can also get the smell of oil under the bonnet as it burns off on the hot manifold.

When you fit the gaskets you need to use some kind of gasket sealant on the half moons such as hylomar or similar and plenty of it otherwise you will find that the oil will find a way past it. This is what the BMW technical guide recommends. Its also a hugely common fault with this engine along with Valley Pan Gaskets, blowing exhaust manifold, coolant leaks etc...... TBF its a miracle if it is not doing any of the above, I have a friend that works for BMW who said its a running joke that the coolant should be replaced every 5 years on them as he has never know one of the engines to hold coolant for that length of time  2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography
