Thanks Kurt.
Just assumed it was 16. It made hell of a racket when they fired it up. I think the owner uses it for air displays.

Rotary aero engines died out during the first world war. They are not to be confused with w-a-n-k-e-l engines (hyphons needed or the censorship nazi turns it into a Censored ). They look like normal radial engines but instead of the crank turning the prop, the crank is bolted to the aircraft and the whole engine rotates around the crank. The prop is bolted to the engine.

It sounds crazy, and it is, but that's how many engines worked. Here you can see one starting.

There are no 16 cylinder radial engines. Each row of a radial engine must have an odd number of cylinders, otherwise the firing order doesn't work, so while there are 14 cylinder two row radials and 18 cylinder two row radials, there are no 16.

Also, it was easy to count the number of cylinders in the picture you posted, and it didn't look like that size/age of aircraft would have an 18 cylinder engine.

A truly amazing air/space craft. I remember reading about it as a kid and it was like a fantasy world. 4500mph!

I saw it in the flesh at the Smithsonian 9 years ago.

Air Canada described this as an 'incident upon landing'. Whistle

AND they had to taxi back to the terminal to use the wifi! Laughing I guess even the pilots couldn't afford the in-flight wifi charges. Mr. Green
