The aeroplane spotters thread

I regularly have ancient aircraft flying over my house.

This is the most regular, a Junkers JU52, or as I prefer to call it - the corrugated three engined Hitler-mobile. I'm glad corrugated never became popular beyond this aircraft and a few garden sheds and factories.

You can tell immediately from its sound when it's flying over, very distinctive rumble.



In german it's often called Tante Ju, Anty Ju, which seems extraordinary given its use in the war and its close connection with Hitler - specifically in his 'Hitler over Germany' campaign, but then the VW Beetle became known as the Love Bug. Here he is sitting in it. Notice how he got a seat that's both window and aisle - typical of a meglomaniac. I've no idea why he's attracted so many gay men wanting to give him flowers - he was obviously a 1930's German gay icon - the David Beckham of his day.



Here it is flying over Luzern. I live where the W is on the wing.

A much less frequent visitor is this Lockheed Constelation, which is a fabulous looking plane, and those Curtis Wright Turbo Compound engines sound brilliant. I expected them not to with all the energy taken out of the exhaust, but no - just how big radials should sound.

Now this Consolidated PBY Catalina is a very rare sight. It flew over and I rushed in to get my camera but by the time I'd taken a picture, even with a 260mm zoom, this is all I got. (The other pictures weren't taken by me by the way).



It then flew over the next day and I used my camera phone, so again not a great pic.



It's one of favorite aeroplanes - just wish it had landed on the lake!

thanks for sharing Kurt...i suppose you do know about this site, http://www.flightradar24.com i know that most old planes dont have transponders but its fun monitoring whats flying over you.. ... - .- -.

reference Flightradar24 it has recently added the capability to accurately locate aircraft through the use of multilateration (MLAT). This will allow the it to display positions of non-ADS-B equipped aircraft.

Its primary technology for tracking is ADS-B. A large number of aircraft are not yet equipped with an ADS-B transponder and instead send out a signal that does not contain positional information. When it has four or more ADS-B receivers covering the same area, it’s able calculate the position of non-ADS-B equipped aircraft in that area by measuring the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of an aircraft’s signal.

It has MLAT coverage in large parts of Europe, with coverage is expanding rapidly. It also uses FAA data for US & Canada.

So you should be able to see more and more Thumbs Up

used to get a free airshow at home every weekend until they built the new runway at Manchester and re routed the corridor they used Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Mine was a blue one! Smile

Also if you are on flightradar via your mobile phone you can point your mobile at the sky and it will show you what aircraft are above you via their call sign ....

Useless bit of info ....... Now back to Planes Thumbs Up

Talking of Manchester, some years ago I worked for a CAD (Computer Aided Design) Vendor based not far from Barton Aerodrome. One of the guys I worked with was a real fan of aircraft. Anyway, one year at the Barton Air Show, they were due to have a flypast by the USAF in one of the SR-71 Blackbird Spy Planes which had flown over from the States specially for the show, and was supposed to do a low level flypast over the runway at Barton.

At the duly arranged time, the Barton PA system crackled into life with the dulcet tones of the Blackbird Pilot, saying that he was approaching the main runway to start his low level pass, but nobody at Barton could see anything, unfortunately the Pilot was doing his low-level passes over Manchester Airport (then known as 'Ringway') and has basically caused the entire airport to shut down! The noise was AWESOME and the best bit... they really didnt care about the amount of fuel being burned when you could see from a good 2miles away almost when the engines were pushed into life! Possibly vodka fuelled! And the wing flex... I haven't seen wings load up like that bar some old military kit like dying nimrods lol

And a video from the landing and from the take off from others that were there...





There is a much better video out there of the 225 coming in over us whilst at the road side when it first comes in and you could feel the ground move when the wheels dropped onto tarmac Very Happy

@Robert - been to Duxford many, many times. Love it.

As for the AN225, I saw it at Farnborough in what, 1990? Yes, lots of wing flex. Truly bizzare and wonderfull plane.

I took this photo myself from my garden on Sunday morning. The red arrows were flying at the airshow on Saturday, but as always, when they leave on the Sunday they always put on a bit of a show before they go.
Because we live on a hill, the jets fly level with us some times. I can see a bit of runway from my house.
We get spitfires flying over now and again and you can feel the throb of the engines in your chest as they pass.

On the Saturday, at the show, there were only 8 flying. This is all 9 leaving.
