'Hunting' rev counter

Hi all,

Noticed this morning that my rev counter was hunting at idle in D (waiting at lights). Not really spotted it before. Stuck IID on it and it pulled no faults, so assume it's just 'one of those things they do as they get older'.....

I'll take a peak under the bonnet later ... any ideas where to start looking? Land Rover Addict

There is more of a vibration than I have been used to, hard to tell if the engine is making any more/less noise due to the soundproofing tbh - it's pretty quiet at idle. Land Rover Addict

It's only done 110,000 miles .... and the gear changes are fine (although now you mention it this morning it did seem to hunt around for the correct gear in the 30.....) Land Rover Addict

I'll check the air hoses around the MAF's - turbo hoses are fine and there's just the normal diesel mist on hard acceleration - no clouds.

Oddly when I parked it up to pull the codes with the IID it was idling fine in P,D and R Big Cry Land Rover Addict

If it does the same again I'll get it booked in then, I'll still do a visual check of the engine compartment as it was recently serviced and I didn't do my usual check over as it's been dark whenever I get back from work Sad Land Rover Addict

It hasn't been serviced in my ownership, I will have to check the paperwork I got from the LR Dealership that owned it before me. I was under the impression that these things are sealed for life, moreso than the old ZF's I had in my Discovery V8?

There's no way to check/top up the level from above from what I can see .....

I am going to try this next time (if) it happens :

Place g/box in neutral - see if anything changes - if it doesn't - engine related, if does transmission.

Although am I wrong in assuming that the ZF in these switches to N when the brakes are fully applied (and the speed sensors show 0), either way this moving of the rev counter up and down 25/50rpm didn't happen once moving. Land Rover Addict

@DMRR,

Is your a 3.6TDV8?

If so -
Diesel/ 6Spd ZF – 2007MY to 2010MY (UK 56 plate to 2010 plate) = 3.6TDV8 engine using the ZF 6HP2, 6 speed automatic gearbox.

LR schedules say you should change automatic transmission fluid and filter at 10 years or 150k miles. Many forum members wouldn't wait that long though:

Yeah it is - so it's under any of those recommendations. I live quite close to the ZF place so I'll ping them a mail or visit if it does it again and I can confirm transmission.

It did a 400 mile run yesterday and was faultlessly smooth all day, and as I had a passenger we were talking with the media system turned off, no odd noises or clunks, and only the exhaust note when kicking down to pass. One thing I have been meaning to ask, does anyone know if the TDV8 has a cold start mode like the SC did which revs it higher in low temperatures to get the fluids up to temp (on the SC it would feel like GGS mode). Land Rover Addict
