Lots of threads on the forum regarding batteries going flat, more so in the winter or if the vehicle os not used every day.
I have been using the CTEK battery conditioner for a number of years now. This piece of electronic equipment has a complex circuit that allows the conditioner to be connected to the vehicle without disconnecting the battery first. There is no risk of the ECUs in the car being damaged.

Just looking at the picture above reminded me that the diesel cooler shown has a pipe/tube leading out to the front of the vehicle. It's good management to remove this pipe every now and then to remove the debris and dead flies that will eventually choke the cooling matrix.
