Thanks Norman - that was on my mind.
I did say 'recent' i.e. something that if used would still be modern - otherwise we might just select classic Range Rover.
I think G Wagen would have been close if they had not overpriced it as has been pointed out.
I guess they can sell a few at that high price.
It makes me wonder if a used GL might fit the bill? Are they 4x4?

On reflection, GL is too close to L322.

What about a base model Discovery 4? Has all the attributes you'd expect but not a lot of frills. Price is about right or maybe even under. Graham

Disco is what Land Rover would say I suppose.
I thought of Nissan X-Trail but it doesn't properly fit the bill.

Jeep Grand Cherokee? The price fits.
Trouble is I'd expect it to fall apart fairly quickly and the brand is not a strong as LR.

so even as it started to become more mainstream luxury, if you see what I mean, the classic was still a bit pricey. I seem to remember an xr4x4 Sierra was between £12k and £13k at the time.....

Not the same I know, but gives a price comparison...... Classic nearly double ! 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I think a current purchase price new of £55K would be fair. Clearly a 405 is way off now even if we only compared on price.

OK. I think nearest is a late Discovery. Some of the 4x4 double cab pickups are close too. Maybe the replacement for Defender will provide a better answer.
I don't want any of the options so far, so L322 stays Very Happy

United Kingdom

Discovery probably closest in ethos to the RRC... there's a late model basic GS with cloth seats in green that I see about that makes me somewhat mindful of a RRC!
