Engine Failsafe Mode Fault......... Fault...!!??!

Went to see my Mother yesterday who has been in hospital all week, 500 mile round trip....

Left home and within a few hundred yards the bong of doom sounded, in the display was "Engine Failsafe Mode" car was running perfectly and no warning lights on... drove a bit further and within a mile or two.... bong... and then the faults, ABS, HDC and EAS, so now got a right xmas tree on!!! basically the ones that come on when you disconnect the battery... I did try the lock to lock and that didn't clear them...

Had to stop for LPG so whopped out the IID tool and cleared them all.... set off again and within yards... bong... Engine Failsafe Mode..... still no difference in performance or running, then after a short time the ABS, HDC and EAS came on again, this time the MIL was lit as well....

This happened the entire way there... lots of lights up and the faults showing, the only thing, was that the car wouldn't drop to motorway height as the EAS was locked out... it stayed in standard height but was self leveling etc when we stopped...

Car drove spot on, did the usual wonderful MPG (not) and showed no other signs of being poorly... reset it several more times but the scenario continued all the way there....

Left to come home and the Engine Failsafe Mode came on but not the other three.... this happened all the way home, again stopping and clearing it a few times....

The only new faults showing are

LCM light control ECU

0x57 Airsuspension Active/Inactive
0x58 Emergency engine program fault
0x0094 Unknown
0x0095 Unknown

(some of those may have been on before)

So... anyone any ideas, can't understand why the LCM would show an engine program fault....

As is usual with the FF been out several times today and no bongs at all... everything fine....

Battery is the biggest that would fit and less than 6 months old, alternator is less than a month old, voltage is 14.2v running with everything on....

So do I have a faulty fault, that is showing a fault, but isn't at fault, or a fault that is a fault and the faulty thing is that the fault isn't showing Pete

I think one of these:

The only fault to worry about is the 58, 94 & 95 are always there and can be ignored, 57 comes because of 58 and the LCM carries a fault if 57 happens.

Something could be happening, intermittent sensor failure or loose wire somewhere.... .

Pete, when was the last time you checked the exhaust on the compressor? Or a dodgy height sensor freezing overnight if caked in mud?

Engine anomalies quite often come down to LPG issues of which the car cannot fathom out!

Maybe worth a look?

Joe... sounds about right cheers... faulty sensor or Ecu I think, could be moisture somewhere as it hasn't been used in a while......

Craig.... There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the running of the car, I checked all live values and everything is working as it should...

LPG system is working spot on, had to give it a bit of a tune up after changing the faulty accelerator pedal a while ago and going from 70% max throttle position to 100%...!!!

And if you are alleging that my car has mud on it then think again young man.... I can't stand having it dirty so if anything it gets overcleaned..... Very Happy

It's all quiet on the dash front at present so we shall see.......

Just thought I'd share the amusement of the FF being able to tell you that it has a fault on a fault...!!!??!?!?!??! Pete

I had all the issues you report last week, only I made it into limp home mode.
I dont have a fault reader.

I did a manual reset on the check engine service light as the service counter was in negative territory.
No issues since then.

It's been fine now for several days, no bongs or lights on... It wasn't used for several days prior to this so I suspect moisture got into some plug or other and upset the sensitive little thing.... Ah bless.... Pete

Pete, how old is your alternator? Might be a brushes thing. On the not so mighty Landcruiser that I had to drive for a living, when the alternator had a hicup the whole dash would light up with every error light know to man and some that weren't Shocked
Yes people you read it right Landcruiser and fault in the same line Shocked it does happen Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Have you been in the wet stuff again? possible ingress in the ecu box under the bonnet? Or maybe it's just trying to say hello in a FF sort of way Wink
I kept on getting intermittent side light faults, fine for weeks then all of a sudden BONG! and by the time I'd turned the lights on and run around the front ......... all was ok again Censored
found the cause was a corroded side light holder, cleaned it and all was good for 3 weeks then BONG! Got my hands on another, and when I pulled it apart the cable end was rotten too Evil or Very Mad
Fingers crossed that it was just saying hello, and it's all over now Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Been fine for 17 months and now, exactly the same thing...

Engine Failsafe mode followed by HDC EAS ABS faults... no loss of power... runs fine...

When I use the IID tool to read the faults it clears them and the only fault left of note is the

0x58 Emergency engine program fault in the LCM...

Did it about 5 times in a row on Monday, was then fine for over 100miles on way home... had a couple of trips in the last few days and all OK then it started again today....

Any more ideas chaps...??????? Pete

Other sites that mention this tend to point to electrical or LPG. I saw you said the LPG was spot on and the alternator was fairly new as the battery. So what about ground connection or a bad cell in the battery? Not in the RR but my triumph had a bad cell that took months to finally kill the battery. Read fine and charged fine but every now and then would act as if dead and then just fine again.

I have a voltage gauge inside the FF, my first thought was low voltage but the volts were above 14 so don't think it was that...

LPG though... we were away from home and I filled it at a place I've not used before, LPG does vary in quality, maybe I got some bad stuff.... not much left in this tank so hopefully that might sort it...

Cheers.... Thumbs Up Pete

I really know nothing about LPG systems for autos. I assume you fill the tank and not swap it out with another? Do the tanks have condensation issues over time?

Separate pressurized gas tank in the spare wheel well... no issues with condensation as it's sealed, uses it's own injectors fitted into the inlet manifold, LPG ECU "steals" info from the FF's engine ECU re injector opening times, lambda feedback etc to control the mixture but if you get poor quality LPG it's like old petrol, the engine won't like it...

Lets hope that's what it is.... Thumbs Up Pete
