Fantastic idea. But can you imagine the security check before the Americans would ever sell one?

I've heard they can be rather nasty to fly. It seems the engines can 'hick up ' and suddenly go into full reserve. If that happens, you have a fraction of a second to eject before the plane tears you, and itself, apart. Shocked

With money REALLY no object, I'd prefer Concorde fitted out as a business jet. Very Happy Very Happy Thumbs Up

Ha ha, I suppose they are both about the same age...

Just think though, SR71 is likley to be able to go twice as fast as concorde...

And with no spy kit on board enough room to store some luggage and updated avionics and engines could be good. They may even be able to stop the thing leaking as I think the mid air refuelling is the real expense..

Mach 3+ with some unofficial bits I'm sure saying closer to 4...

The absolute max was mach 3.2 - after that the engines melted.

To get 'em flying again you'd need to start up the whole industry of suppliers that kept 'em going.

They say 3.2+ and never officially declassified what they had pushed it to... Just think with engines 50years newer and avionics and a sealed set of fuel tanks how quick it could be!! Be in oz in a few hours instead of a day... I bet some business tycoons would love that perk!

Spares... I'm sure the odd museum would swap parts with you to keep theirs complete and a private one in the air and a donation to them of course... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

They haven't flowen for a very long time mainly because they were a bit of a hand full and troublesome Censored and any way anything it could do a satellite could do and all day and day , shame realy they look like fun 😃 2008 MY Supercharged

Satellites have set/timed orbits so if you have something mobile to hide you can move it away from the satellites prying cameras between orbits. A high altitude fast aircraft can make several fly overs to track down what you are looking for. I'm willing to bet that the yanks have something already that has taken the place of the SR-17, possibly the Aurora? Travelling around in circles again.

This is a SR071 pilot on the leaks. Wasn't such a big issue.

Re parts, there's another interview with the same guy (which I can't find) and he lists a lot of the perishable parts that would need to be supplied to get the plane back in the air. It's not just a question of raiding a museum.

You're right the place could fly faster today. The constraining factor was the compressor temperature, but today they could really push that temperature quite a bit higher.
