What is today's music genre? Rock, Pop, Ska, Soul, Reggae, Electro, Funk?...

I like a lot of music covering all decades to the present day, I'm not stuck in the 70's/80's (My teen years were the 80's). The music channels have always been a good way for me to listen to modern music, it's just the last few years are uninspiring.
I don't believe it's that I'm getting old either, the passion seems to have gone, the lyrics that were heart felt from personal experience, life issues that used to move you emotionally, they just don't seem to be there.

My late uncle was John Gustafson. I'm now rediscovering his great music from the 60's, 70's and the 80's.
All music is good is good music. Some of us just have better taste  Travelling around in circles again.

There is so much good music out there today, but you have to maybe search a little as the xfactor type crap dominates the headlines. Thankfully my boys are into rock/guitar/good music and they do the searching for me, as in I hear them listening to it and ask who's playing.... Very handy.
There are defining sounds of decades past that we now call classics, give it time and I'm sure there will be classics from this decade as well..

The difference between old and new music is old singers had backing groups, modern groups have a backing singer. In other words you could hear what an old singer was singing, unlike modern music.

There's loads of good new stuff out there but you've got to look for it. I do music promoting in my spare time and out on 8 or so gigs per year so am always on the look out for new good stuff.
This years outstanding performer award (who I managed to book) goes to David Woodcock from Saarfend - Brilliant. Otherwise there's a Spanish outfit called 'Ose Leone' who are definitely worth a listen if you ever thought Talk Talk's spirit of Eden album was good.

i am, not a fan of the Beatles and McCartney (not sure of spelling) however a Radio 4 issue today aired a song before and after John Bohnam, what a difference after, it actually sounded bloody good, so I will have to revisit my view on the Bohnam chap wherever he is from

I happen to think you get to an age and only "your oldie's/favourites" will do any longer... I too have spoken to my 15yr old daughter about this subject recently and to be fair... There are still lots of similarities to when i grew up in the eighties/early nighties to today... S.A.W v Cowell/X factor etc (not that i can stand the latter mind you!) Does anyone think "One D" or "Olly Murs" will be remembered in years to come NO but i bet they will be played to housewives via "Heart FM" in 30yrs time

Mmmmmm, I'm happy to discover new music (and will most certainly follow up on the recommendations here). Maybe the 60s, 70s and 80s were just a brilliant time for good music. Maybe because all of a sudden there was a big departure from classic music (and I do appreciate classic music a lot) into so many different avenues and in almost every style you will find a few really good ones.

Maybe it is just harder to create a classic song these days, because soo much has been done in the decades of R&R, Rock, Pop etc. and a lot of current artists have no "new" styles to choose from and can only stay within or combine exisiting styles.

I mean I love some of the modern stuff as well (Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold) but that is still moving on from Pink Floyd, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre (big favourites of mine).

Maybe that is it, there is still a lot of good stuff around but it is not as groundbreaking and it has not had the time to turn into a classic like Stairway to Heaven or Bohemian Rhapsody or Child in Time.

I'm like Craig by the way, really love my music (one reason I love going on long drives in the FFRR by myself, just to enjoy lots of music) and my wife doesn't like a lot of music around the house. She even vetoed (we both have the power of veto) my beautiful B&W speakers, Rotel Amplifier set and Sony top of the line CD player from being in the living room (the only place big enough to let them come into their own). So the only place to really enjoy my music is in the FFRR because of its brilliant sounds system.

Anyway, very nice to hear the view of you all on this and thanks for the tips on newer acts to start listening to. Please keep them coming

By the way, there is a phenomenon that has been "discovered" by scientists that links love for certain music to our human development stages. For example, music in the womb and in our younger years as babies (for me the 60's, love them) and the most important time is puberty, linked to the hormones starting to do their work, extreme emotions and the music you hear in those days apparently creates a strong attachement to the music you are exposed to in those days. Not entirely correct for me but pretty good still, maybe it is also a style of music (since my favourites do cover 3 decades at least). Interesting subject I think  MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Music changes and evolves, our love of the past is understandable (classic cars?) but if I play older music in my car my kids +/- 30 insist I change it to something more palatable to them.
For example my son likes The Courteeners, I've never heard of them but they're not bad - im always scouring the net for stuff just bought SWMBO 10 CDs for Christmas all 70s 80s or 90s compilations or "best of" type stuff. But because of the kids as well as liking all that classic stuff I also listen to Amy Winehouse, The Killers, Jake Bugg, Paoulo Nutini etc.
Don't just look back also look forward - I don't want a "classic" Range Rover but do want an L405 - each to their own I say.  Geoff

I listen to many of the bands listed above and would love to find a stream of new talent but there is some out there. Just listen to Planet Rock and you will hear some great new(er) bands such as Airbourne (think AC/DC), Blackberry Smoke, Black Stone Cherry etc.

Still, nothing beats solid musicianship for me so I am still listening to Zeppelin, Floyd, Rush (possibly the biggest band nobody has ever heard of?) and has anybody listened to Dream Theater?

There are a lot of problems with todays' music, the main problems are that musicians have been replaced with talentless computers. They don't employ a full string section as part of the band, they get a synth and plug it in to a computer and produce hundreds of parts that are all played together, with a single push of a button. As such there is no feeling or artistic interpretation in the piece. This has been going on for years, infact decades, since the 70's when synths first made an appearance.
Plus the CIA has stopped it's manufacture of such wonderful writing aids like LSD, and then there is the better detection rates in drug smuggling, which has restricted the amount of creative writing that's been going on. I know that not all musicians were off their faces, but you'll be hard pushed to find a great that wasn't off their face during their great moments of writing! In the 60's and 70's drugs were the norm when it came to all matters Rock'n'Roll.
There are some talented musicians out there, but they are hard to find, KT Tunstall is one talented lady, who plays real instruments and mostly does it all herself, all be it with the aid of a digital sampler. There is one chap that I've seen in the last decade that can be truly be described as a master, when it comes to one man bands, Sea Sic Steve. When I first herd him, I was working at the Cambridge Folk Festival, and I herd what I thought was a very good Blues group on stage, so I thought I'd go along for a better look, One man No synths No backing tape Fantastic
And while he appeared to be drug free , I now believe that he might be powered by boose
The way the music industry has gone all commercial is a real shame, all these X talent factor types who can't do any thing but sing something that someone else has written, is killing the real stars. I'd just like to get hold of the fools that buy the 'music' and educate them as to what real Music sounds like. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
