Why is there no memorable music being made anymore

This may seem a bit "old fart thinking everything used to be better" (which it isn't by the way) but with music I feel that it is. I mean look at Queen (we discussed that earlier here), tonight I was listening to Led Zeppelin and started thinking about the music that came from that era, Deep Purple, the Eagles etc. etc. etc. I believe the top 20 of most best songs ever is decades old and I don't expect it to change much.

And I am not just an old rocker, just listen to Kate Bush and shivers are running down my spine with quite a few of her songs.

I have been having many a discussion with SWMBO (well not when it comes to brilliant music IMHO) that after the 80's (where there were still some brilliant songs created) nothing of substance has been written/produced. Guns 'n Roses (just listen to November Rain) Nirwana and a few more like that.

Can anyone name "recent" songs that can be put into the same class as these oldies (Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water, Bohemian Rhapsody) ??? I can't to be honest and that is not because I don't want it to. Maybe Adele, Dido, Ilse de Lange (little Dutch girl, brilliant Country and Western singer/songwriter) ??

I'd be interested in your view on this Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Blame X factor type shows.

It may be an age thing but 20 plus years ago you asked anyone and they'd no what was number 1 in the charts, you ask someone that now.

What is No1 in the charts anyway?!

I tend to agree with you entirely Thumbs Up being a child of the 70s & 80s!!

However, as food for thought how about Robbie Williams & Angels? My current like is Taylor Swift and 1989 (in particular Shake It Off!).

Because of Cowell and his f Censored kwits along with their f Censored g sob stories ... Seen more crying on X factor than my 2 year old granddaughters nursery

Plus their f Censored g two lines of lyrics that are repeated all through the 3 minute song along with people bumming them up to high heavens of how good they are .... I don't think ... ====================================

"Open Mike Night " sounded like a lot of fun until i found out i was going to an Autopsy

Taking from all the above, the main reason is reality TV and pop band manufacturing companies going back to the likes of Stock, Aitken & Waterman who manufactured more synthetic teenybopper rubbish such as Rick Astley, Sinitta, etc than there was real music to challenge it.

X Factor and the like only finds decent singers, and rarely are those of an exceptional standard. Bands (real bands) need Drummers, Bassists, Guitarists, Keyboard players, Brass & Woodwind players, backing vocalists, song writers, Oh Yeah, some person with a passion needs to write the damn things, not a bloody song factory.

Where are the last bands like that? Guns N Roses, Oasis, etc. 90's bands. I honestly can't think of a Noughties band like that, mainly because of all the junk like Atomic Kitten, Pussycat Dolls, none of whom can actually properly hold a note, let alone play an instrument.

Where are the great guitarists like Gary Moore? (on a synthesiser)
Where are the great Drummers such as John Bonham and Ginger Baker? (in a beat box these days)
Great Bassists such as Mark King? (Keyboard based now)
Continue for the instruments in a good band and you begin to see that it's all been replaced with computerised rubbish, and a computer can't "feel" the music. You get soul-less reproduction of a sequence of notes, no emotion, feeling or real soul. A heartless machine can never produce music from the heart!

And that's why my CD changer in the car has nothing newer than the 80's. Thumbs Up

Completely agree.

This is a band from the early 70's that I've been listening to a lot. They weren't around for long, although their lead singer went on to immensely great things with another band.

This is one of their best songs. You simply don't hear music as well made as this anymore.

Look at the history of the charts, 60's,70's 80's number one hits for the year would be around 10 - 20 for the year, now it's practically 52 number one's for the year!

The music today will not be remembered in 20 or 30 years time like the hits from the 70's/80's era are today.

I tend to agree pretty much with all the above.

No idea what number 1 is. Can't find much I like now, but to be fair, I don't listen to the radio either, so am unlikely to find something new as easily as when I was younger.

I was born in 1970 and grew up with the Eagles and Dr Hook etc. my Mum always played Dobie Gray, Mungo Jerry, Carpenters etc.

I do like Taylor Swift though, have the latest album in the car with Nickelback, Alanis Morissette, Del Amitri and Pink.

I don't watch any of the talent shows either.

I do own a few Kelly Clarkson albums and she won American Idol or something similar.

It seems that if you want to make money, you have to sell loads of records, and to do that you have to make what people like........ When they have little taste...... Laughing 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

STOP! you are referring to specific era's of music. ie 70's rock. others will hanker for Soul all day long. My father in law wont have anything, but, Big Band.
There are some popular but cr@p groups, in these modern times. the real skill is behind the curtain, ie the backing band, not the 'star' singer(s) it's the backing music though, that 'fills the radio' up till the ululating high note (song title) etc.
Having the music video as a 1st up medium, means, we are led to believe, you have to look perfect to sound better. (wrong!)
I would argue, in favour of modern music, and I'm fifty years young. the internet has a wealth of 'discovery music'. and its all 'free' just go to a streaming site, like Spotify, pick a few genres, play it and there it is. -behind all the names you see.

Shows like Jools Holland have become a massive improvement over pathetic talent drivel. many of todays better acts have this show to thank. Its a shame (or maybe a blessing!) that it is shown at a time more suited to bedtime etc.
Watch this, it's the debut of Katie Tunstall, she could perform this song, on her own, on a pub stage, or the London Palladium, using just a small box of modern equipment, and raw talent.

OR, take a busking tramp, give the man a break on new years eve, and people magically wake up from their musical slumber! with junkshop instruments... this is a great example.
if you look deeper than the the first page, you will find some quality stuff. if you have an ipod, or smartphone, you are half way there already, just find a satellite radio station finder, like 'radioplayer', 'tune in radio' or 'Spotify', and connect to a hifi. there you go! if you want it in your car, these days, its all easy enough without buying CD's. with these modern players, you start of somewhere, and it offers you stuff to listen, you then get deeper to the heart of what you want. bright new stuff, or oldie fm, (my terms!)

just got the missuss into lana del ray/paloma faith etc you can play everything from their back cataloges. its not to everyones taste, but its choose-able against say, 'sh!tpop'

Enjoy your oldies, give some new acts a break, and awake your ears!

Jezus, you're a bunch of nagging old dinosaurs, but you're driving Range Rovers, so I understand.
Just lend your ear to the latest music of men like John Mayall, Leonnard Cohen or even Bob Dylan.....or Tony Bennet with Cher. Mr. Green

No TBH there is a lot of good music out there, but you have to go out and get it in concert. There are, like in the sixties ( yes I'm getting old) a good bunch of top musicians doing great things but they just don't get the marketing support to grow in to the Big Scene and they change musical partners in a STD way. They are there to make music, not to get famous. Go to the little theaters, pubs, open concert circuits in summer etc.

I went to John Mayall in Bordeaux, he was doing his 80th birthday tour ( can you believe it?) and was in concert with a group of young instrumentalists that were really great. All that talent for 200 people in a little theater.
Lorde from New Zealand is a girl that is on the breakthrough and writes good text and sings her way, started in these little theaters etc. she is born in 1996 so there is still a bunch of talent out there.

I also think that for our generation, music was a part of life, a way to live. Now music has become a consumable, like chewing gum. You use it and spit it out, try different tastes and forget all about it.
