WARNING: Bonnet catches may not catch

Coming back from Lowestoft the other day, I was on a fast bit of dual carriageway. I had to add a bit of speed to avoid trapping a car behind a slow-moving lorry. I noticed the driver's side edge of the bonnet lift. I found the next layby and investigated. The driver's side was not secured but the nearside catch was. I'd refilled the washer bottle a few days before.

It took three slams to get the drivers side to catch.

So, if you open the bonnet, test each side after closing it.

Good advice sir Bow down , I check the 322 bonnet every time it open, they are big heavy lumps to fly up! If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Surely the bonnet catches can be adjusted so they hold securely. A coating of grease helps too. Thumbs Up

The problem on the L405 is that there are two catches. There is a satisfying clunk as you drop it and a cursory central feel will indicate that it is closed. However, you need to test both sides.

I will be greasing my catches (ooh er missus) when I have a moment

Probably worth noting Craig, the grease LR use seems to be earth shifter grade. I cleaned it all off with brake cleaner and then applied some spray white grease which doesn't go hard in the cold. The bonnet closes properly every time with no more than a 18" drop slam. Thumbs Up

To be honest, i don't think I've seen more than half a dozen FF's with any kind of lube on them... I presumed LR did not do it Whistle

We white grease everyone during a service...

A warning should have appeared on your dash info. It's one you really notice.

Try check by deliberately engaging just one catch, then start.

It's not so unusual for the catches not to align perfectly from new and the dealers have to fine tune/balance them.

I had the same problem after washer bottle fill. One catch would not re-engage at all without very excessive pressure to the problem side.

Soon sorted by dealer. L322 bonnet can stand a bit of a slam, but not so much with L405. It is lighter and anyway, does the price of these not demand a decent bonnet closure!!

How about a soft close bonnet to go with the doors? Thumbs Up

I have had the same problem on my Disco 4. Had to stop a coupe of times to resecure the passenger side catch.

As you say, a good slam and a proper check each time now!
