Try changing it under screen settings. I think there are two settings as above, have had a play myself as screen a little bright at night. Unless you really need it you may turn it off altogether. Found a lot of settings on there reset once you turn off and back on again. Still learning myself.

Doesn't auto dim, but can be dimmed Or to turn it off, press and hold the voice command button on the steering wheel, and say "display off"

My late 05 touch screen does dim (sometimes!) When working it dims / brightens during the day (for example sunny day going into shade it brightens) However 50% of the time it does neither and I have it turned down to minimum brightness - the brightness nob (oh-er) does change it as well but only by a small amount. Noticed when it's working at night, turning the lights on does make it dimer.

there is a light sensor [number 12] and it could possibly be blocked with dirt ,

You beat me to it Stan... The unit has a low light sensor which takes a good few seconds (often 30secs) to dim the unit... |

That's a new one on me, still really bright at night on mine😢, I end up turning it off most of the time, much prefer driving with it off as its much less distracting. |

For night driving I find the voice controls really help , no rummaging through nav menus just press the button an " navigation screen off" and bask in the cool green glow of waterfall lighting , it really looks good without the big screen glow and very restful. 2008 MY Supercharged

IIRC in the menus you can set how bright it is at night, also try it by turning the vehicle lights on from auto and seeing if it dims then |
