Managed to get a few part numbers of the part and the clip GG23 On the part and 11246 on the clip. Tried googling the numbers but no joy. Taking the car to my local mechanic on Monday for him to take a look. Just had a google and I don't think it is camshaft sensor, they appear to be in the front of the engine, I can't see too well from your pictures, do a google image search on AJV8 engine sensor and see if any of them look like yours... if not pop down to the dealers, speak to the parts dept and get him to find it on the computer....

i think your right with the camshaft sensor. been searching all night and can't find one that matches it. the only one i can see is the camshaft sensor for the bmw 4.4 which looks slightly different.

I'd leave it well alone if I were you, if it's something like a pressure release valve you could end up with a big bill on your hands.... personally I wouldn't bother with that small amount of moisture around it, if it gets any worse maybe do something...... Pete

done a bit more digging and from what i can see this is the variable valve timing solenoid, which has been known to leak out oil due to a bad pcv. found this post on range rovers.net I have also noticed a slight suction type noise on accelerating. think i will replace the pcv and see how it goes from there. it seemed to sort this guys problems anyway.

also found this on the jaguar forum saying that you can just pry the old seals out and fit new ones without removing the solenoid. I'm thinking this is more likely to be the probable as the solenoid on the right hand side is bone dry

will pick up new rubber seal tomorrow and let use know how i get on. this problem seems pretty common over on the juguar forums and usually its just the rubber seal that needs replaced. how do i know if the pcv is bad and need replaced ? the car runs, starts fine and fuel consumption is as it should be ??
