MOT is due saturday and im going through my checklist. The headlight wash+wipe doesnt seem to work. I admit its something i failed to check when purchasing the car recently. There's also the nozzle jet cap missing on the passenger side. The wiper blades are covered in green algae so im assuming the wash+wipe system hasn't worked for quite a while.

I really dont want to spend a few hundred in repairing/replacing the units as my budget is almost exhausted on replacing the cooling system + a full comprehensive service.

Is there anyway i can remove them and put in a blanking plate/cover in order to pass the MOT?

Any hints/tips/recommendations to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I think they only work when headlights are on and then only every 5th time the windscreen washer is operated. Also I guess fuse is checked etc. Howard

The mot Inspection Manual states that a headlight wash / wipe system "may" be fitted and if so it must work.
I might be wrong but if you remove the system completely it isn't fitted and therefore is not a testable item and as such can't be failed for it.

yes....im thinking along the sames line.....(i never use the system intentionally anyway!) ...but is there a way to blank off where the washer wiper arm protrudes out of the plastic plate (under the headlight)

Xenon lights have to have a wash system by law, as a dirty lens scatters the light inconsistently and dazzles other drivers.

If you have a cap missing, the water will not be sprayed correctly I don't think.

See how you go, but definately don't remove it.

The facelift cars don't have a wiper as the water is high pressure......

That piece of plastic can be removed, presumably you could remove each of them and stick a piece of plastic on the rear of each of them. Should do for an mot. If you were really adventurous you could then also fill the holes and paint them.

i was under the impression only IF they are fitted they are a testable item......in all fairness the mot guidelines are not very clear......

My MOT guy wants the wash/wipe to work because of the Xenons

He has only remembered (or bothered with) this on three years out of the last seven, though.

I am with NDFI on this, if Xenons fitted, then the wash/wipe needs to work. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

If fitted ? I thought they had to be fitted. Which is why they have them.

not saying anyones wrong as im not 100% sure myself but are there not xenons fitted to cars from circa 2003 that dont have wash/wipe systems in place. How do they get through the MOT then?

From the MOT Inspection Manual

It was def a requirement at the time, along with self levelling suspension or headlight levelling. If wipers not fitted it should have high pressure washer jets.

BMWs around the time sometimes had washers that popped out from under the light on a bar, squirted, and popped back in, so may look like it doesn't have any fitted.

That said, in my experience, you'd wash the screen, they'd pop out to squirt and then get snapped off by the 120mph wind and fly over the bonnet and roof......

Does it not depend on HOW good your mot man is if it fails/passes.....at the end of the day its only a small wiper/washer on the headlight  If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!
