just had my tyres replaced yesterday, i always check the tyre pressures and torque of the wheel nuts when i get home.
some of the nuts are swelled, think i will replace them all.
seen some stainless steel ones at the billing show. not cheep, £176+p&p for 16.

Meant to update earlier - used a Bosch multitool to cut the cover off the wheelnut which took a while as didn't want to damage wheel. Then put a 21mm socket on and tried to turn it! Ended up with a long pipe on the end of the socket spanner and stood on it.....and had to bounce to get it to move!! Tight! Can someone please explain how wheel nuts become 'swollen' and then difficult to remove.
I understand that metal expands with heat and then contracts when cold, so how do the wheel nuts remain swollen after the wheels have not been turning for some time?
Whatever the answer I'm going to change my wheel nuts for some new ones.

The wheel nuts have a permanently fixed chrome cap for aesthetic purposes.
Over time, moisture gets between the nut itself and this cap, thus creating a very slight swelling.
Nut then becomes very difficult to get a socket onto it.

I've replaced 4 this year for that very reason.

Given the tens of thousands of pounds that is spent on the machinery that produces them, plus the labour to make them and cost of materials, I actually think they're about right. Not forgetting the profit you need to make in order to remain a viable business.

A set of 16 from Land Rover will cost you around £80 (price based on recent purchase experience direct from LR). Mine is a 2010 model and I've replaced 4 so far.
Clearly they're not up to the job in certain climates.

If you've every intention of keeping the vehicle for a long time, they're a justifiable investment, IMO.
They're even more justifiable if you're ever caught at the side of a busy road changing a puncture and NOT having to face the prospect of all the associated hassle of tossing about with badly designed, swollen wheel nuts... In the dark... While it's raining... With your family in the car...

Now I understand swollen nuts I'm definitely replacing them! Travelling around in circles again.
