Hi ya bud, glade to see you've taken the plunge and saved squillions of dosh and decided to diy!
Might I suggest that you try and find a motor factors instead of Halfrauds, you should be able to get a gallon of cleaner for under a tenner, and is dam hand stuff to have to hand.
So far I have used it for cleaning brakes (obvious) de greasing and cleaning engine parts, cleaning metal prior to welding, surface prep for sticking down add-ons such as hands free kits, it will remove tar spots, grease etc. from cars, cloths, upholstery etc. surface prep for paint.
And most importantly for me supplies me with an emergency re-fill for me Zippo lighter! although the lemon scented one did makes the fags taste a bit funny!!
I would look for a partco or similar. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Hi Pete,

They are "standard" disks and pads for our cars. Just for the non fancy brakes. Brembo make normal disks and pads too, for the standard setup for both the TD6 and V8 like yours.

At £120 delivered from AF, I'm hoping my really bad brake judder will be cured !!

Hi Mark, IF your pads have a backing on them, you will only need to put a very small amount of copper grease on the sides of the pad that make contact with the calliper bracket. But if the back of the pad has no obvious anti squeal coating (normally looks like a sticker 3/4 mm, or a couple of 20 mm heavily painted strips) you will need to put some grease on them too. The ECB pads that I used on mine came with the anti squeal shims unattached, and I had to fashion them in the right shape and stick them on. Basically I hacked them up with the kitchen scissors, pealed the backing, stuck them in place and then trimmed them with a Stanley knife. Do I need to put some copper grease on the caliper guide pins ? I would have thought so, but RAVE says no.

The back of the pads look like this - should I lightly grease them or just leave the backing plate as is ?

Just a small smear of copper grease on the contact area of the "ears" of the pads, no point in putting anything on the back. Paul Redding

Hi Mark, as Steve said, just a small smear of grease on the ears will suffice. basically the area that you can see between your finger and thumb in the second photo, it is literally the bottom of the ear and the outside face, and only needs to be the thin part
As for the pins, if Rave says no, then its not necessary. But they do have tobe clean, I had to give mine a scrape with a screw driver, before giving them a good wire brushing, as the baked on brake dust was like concrete  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

A wire brush and a bit of spray grease works wonders on the sidle pins

Well, being honest, I had to bail out. Could not undo the 16mm bolts that held the caliper to the hub. The little grub screws were fine though.

Had put wd on them, hit them, ended up with a bottle jack on a breaker bar, and the bar bent.

Couldn't see the point of possibly fighting a further 3 of them, or ending up with one side replaced and the other not.

Spoke to my MOT man to recommend a local garage to crack the bolts off (as he does mots only) he then said if I dropped it off Tuesday he'd do them for me for a few beers.

To aid the process I've ordered 4 new bolts from LR so he can smash up the old ones as much as he likes removing them.

I would be happy to carry on after they have been loosened but he said he might as well fit the new stuff if he's that far.....

Would be happy to do myself next time after the help from you chaps. Nearly did it this time.

I feel for you bud, did I not mention that a 24" breaker bar was a preferred item in the toolbox, sorry! Its such an essential item that I just take it for granted everyone has one, but for some reason they are never included in any master mechanic socket set. And yet I challenge anyone to find a processional mechanic who doesn't own at least 1. I have 4! In different sizes, 4 the same size would be excessive

Halfrauds do 1 around the same dosh, but if you hunt about you should be able to get 1 for under £20
They are an absolute must for working on a large car, they can make light work out the most stubborn bolts including rusted wheel nuts, and brake calliper bolts. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
